Goin' Fishin'

Saturday, April 20, 2013

My husband has been asking me, basically since we got married, to go fishing. When we moved back to the land of 10,000 lakes, we shouldn't have had an excuse, but every year I didn't want to put the money into an initial purchase for going fishing. This year I finally gave in and started out his fishing collection.

I was lucky enough to find two good books to start him out, one that tells him about how to fish for each type of local fish and where. The other shows what every Minnesota fish looks like, so we can determine if we're catching the right fish.

We got a fishing rod for all four of us. We got a great starter collection of bait and for safety's sake, life jackets for the kids (we don't plan on going out on a boat, so didn't feel the need for adult ones at this time).

So now we have a new family adventure to do every summer. Plus it helps that fish is a great healthy protein to eat and I know how to cook it up fair and will learn how to do it better as we catch more. I told the husband I won't touch the fish until it's ready to fry up, so he gets the fun part of cleaning and preparing it.

So, in about a month, we'll be ready to go out to the cleanest lakes near us and catch some good dinner. I'm glad we've found a new way to have family time, especially since there are so many lakes to choose from nearby. This will be interesting since I've only fished twice in my entire life!

Today's holidays: Husband Appreciation Day (I think I got that one covered with the new fishing stuff!), Spring Astronomy Day (a clear sky today too!), Volunteer Recognition Day (thank a volunteer you know this weekend), National Pineapple Upside-Down Cake Day (I had a great one the week after Easter), and Lima Bean Respect Day (they're healthy sources of protein, don't overlook them).

I wish I had seen your post yesterday for Husband Appreciation Day. I'll put on my calendar for next year. Maybe I'll make up for it today!

I'm glad you are doing something DH wants to do. Sometimes we forget to include them in our plans. A family outing, no cleaning fish, doing something DH wants is a priceless gift!

Wow! better you than me ( I was never a fan of fishing) with all the bait stuff etc. But I do think it's pretty exciting that you'll actually be able to eat the fish that you catch! There's nothing better than fish that's that fresh! ...... and healthy too! Plus like you said it's a great way to spend some quality family time. Enjoy! emoticon emoticon

I had lima beans on Thursday! I appreciated them, albeit a couple of days early. ;-)

I have only been fishing a handful of times, but loved being out in nature. Hopefully you and you family will get some good bonding in!

My hubby is an avid fisherman and it was a great family time when our kids were growing up. I mostly just pretended to fish so that hubby would only have 2 lines to untangle instead of 3! :)

It's great that you're all prepared and ready to head out for family fun! I used to fish when I was a little girl... but then when I reeled the fish in, I squealed and screamed until my dad got it and threw it back in. I finally realized fishing was not my thing.

Anyway, I hope when you get out there and get going, everyone has a great time!

When my kids were small, we spent a few days at Lake of the Woods. My dad hired a boat and guide who had all the equipment. We caught lots of walleyed pike (yum!). But my 8 year old son wanted to put the fish in the cooler after the guide took them off the hook. I noticed that each time, he then wiped his fish-slimmed hands off INSIDE the pockets of his jeans (yuk). I asked him why and he said, "I just wanted to be discreet!". Lots of fun memories fishing with our kids! Thanks for posting!
