My husband has been asking me, basically since we got married, to go fishing. When we moved back to the land of 10,000 lakes, we shouldn't have had an excuse, but every year I didn't want to put the money into an initial purchase for going fishing. This year I finally gave in and started out his fishing collection.
I was lucky enough to find two good books to start him out, one that tells him about how to fish for each type of local fish and where. The other shows what every Minnesota fish looks like, so we can determine if we're catching the right fish.
We got a fishing rod for all four of us. We got a great starter collection of bait and for safety's sake, life jackets for the kids (we don't plan on going out on a boat, so didn't feel the need for adult ones at this time).
So now we have a new family adventure to do every summer. Plus it helps that fish is a great healthy protein to eat and I know how to cook it up fair and will learn how to do it better as we catch more. I told the husband I won't touch the fish until it's ready to fry up, so he gets the fun part of cleaning and preparing it.
So, in about a month, we'll be ready to go out to the cleanest lakes near us and catch some good dinner. I'm glad we've found a new way to have family time, especially since there are so many lakes to choose from nearby. This will be interesting since I've only fished twice in my entire life!
Today's holidays: Husband Appreciation Day (I think I got that one covered with the new fishing stuff!), Spring Astronomy Day (a clear sky today too!), Volunteer Recognition Day (thank a volunteer you know this weekend), National Pineapple Upside-Down Cake Day (I had a great one the week after Easter), and Lima Bean Respect Day (they're healthy sources of protein, don't overlook them).
