Gained Two Pounds This Week, Casual Essay Due, and Information I Found Out on Yahoo

Saturday, April 20, 2013

Well i gained two pounds this week probably because I ate too many calories and did not exercise enough. I have a Casual Essay to do this week. i have to write about a problem or event going on in the world and then state the cause of why it is happening. I read an article on Yahoo this week about people being unemployed for six months or longer and that employers will not hire them even if they have more experience than ones who have been out of work less time or ones who hop from job to job. They think their skills are out of date and that they cannot function in the work market anymore. Assuming that they would not know how to handle themselves in interviews or in the work area because of the psychological impact of being out of work so long. This definitely put me in a funk after reading this article; and this is the one I have chosen to write about as well. I have a quadruple whammy here; one I do not drive, two I am over 50, three I have been unemployed for going on a three years, and four i do not have that much job experience. Someone posted in the comments the original site about lying on your application and saying you were self employed or had your own company. But do they really think the employers will not find out that they are lying. It appears to me that the government needs to step in here and give incentives to companies to hire these people. It is not helping our economy by having all these people still unemployed. Never heard back from the grocery store yet about the deli or bakery jobs we applied for either. But someone told me that a person who works there said they had a lot of people apply. That tells me that our chances are slim because neither of us worked in a grocery store before. But also I know form past experience that our food stamps will be cut back once i get a job too. How the heck do they expect us to live? It seems they want us to be under their thumbs all the time. Next month I am supposed to get a call from them again about the food stamps. Hope the one who took over does not ask about college. I only got back 1,000 in a refund never got the $499. They are still holding onto my daughter's refund yet.

Sounds like an issue you can write about with the passion of experience. It does seem a no-win situation. I'd like to recommend the site ehow.com. Look at one of its job-related items every day. You may have more going for you than you think. Philippians 4:19 emoticon emoticon

This is just a long shot but have you ever tried volunteering to work in the type of company you want to be employed by? emoticon That way, although you would be working for free for awhile you could pick up relevant skills and perhaps even positive references that are all current. Just a thought.

I'm glad you have your writing to focus on. Can you college career office help in any way?

It certainly seems the deck is stacked against those who are in your position. Like the employers who only want to hire people with experience; but WHERE do they think are going to GET the experience when nobody will give them a job?!?!!?!

I gained 2 pounds in the past not-quite-two weeks, so I know where you're coming from. But I'm treating today like a new day - treadmilled and am watching my diet.

I understand your feelings. I have been unemployed for 5 months now and I am having a very hard time finding a job. Every interview gets my hopes up and then when I do not hear from them or get a rejection I come crashing down. I am waiting to hear back from an interview I had on Thursday. I feel desperate as I am the main support of our family. I hope you get something soon.
