Read John 15.
The sentence about not being able to do anything without Jesus is frequently taken the wrong way. I once heard someone comment that he cut his grass, painted his house and watched a football game one Sunday all without Jesus so it was not true. But the meaning is not that we can do nothing, it is that we can do nothing that will have eternal lasting value, except through Christ. The grass will grow back, the paint will fade but the witness that I present to my neighbor for Christ will last forever, and the choices made for or against Christ will also last forever. There is nothing that I can do for my salvation or the salvation of my friends without Christ.
