Early birthday present

Thursday, April 18, 2013

My DD sent me a 5 ft Mission fig tree and two Concord grape plants for my new place.Apparently she had trouble finding a company who could send plants to California.(insect worries)A company out of Georgia had insect free stuff that could be sent to Calif. It is funny that she sent me grape plants as I live in the middle of a vineyard. The grapes growing here are Barbara for wines. My favorite fruits are Concord grapes and Mission figs(black)I also love Santa Rosa plums.I bought a plum tree last month.I love the sour peel and sweet insides of fruit. So now I have 4 fruit trees,2 grapes and tons of old fashioned Iris from my mom and grand mothers gardens. They both passed away years ago.My brother has some of their Iris;he gave me a huge tub of bulbs. When DD buys her home ,I will pass on some to her.It is a good thing my new little apartment has a huge front yard.Of course, I also sprinkled sun flower seeds everywhere.I have all types, big, small and fancy orange ones.I hope the local critters don't think I planted a buffet for them.Off to the nursey for more seeds emoticon

Sounds wonderful! I love concord grapes and unless I find a farmers market,,, they are impossible to find in the markets.......... it sounds like you settled into your new place...... You have an awesome daughter but I think that you already know that!

Am sure you can't wait to see the first flowers and then fruits! I hope to be planting some fruit trees myself later this year. We can plant them year round, best during the rainy season, since the temperatures don't change much year round

Passing along plants in memory of a family member is my favorite thing. I, too, have some of my grandmother's irises and peonies. I'm so glad your DD knows and loves you well enough to pick exactly your favorites! They will be that much sweeter each time you eat them.

You'll have to have her buy you a Meyer Lemon Tree for Mother's Day. Had those when I was out in CA, and fell in love with the flavor. My son and DIL bought one and took it to AZ and now to OH with them. It's doing well, and they get fruit off of it every season. You can grow them in pots on your patio, or you can plant them in the ground. They are a small tree that grow 8-10 feet tall. Check it out on the web! You won't regret it.

I love our fruit trees. There is nothing like the homegrown fruit you get fresh off the trees!
