So far, I've had a great morning. I woke up early, enjoyed a couple of plantain muffins leftover from yesterday’s breakfast, swept my floors (daily chore and bane of my African existence – dust rules my life!), pulled up water from the cistern for my shower (no running water), and did some yoga. Today, yoga felt goooood. I did Tony Horton’s P90X Yoga, which is a great video for me because it’s intense and sweat-inducing. The only problem with it is that it’s quite the time commitment, coming in at just over 90 minutes!
Although I’m not always into yoga, I do it every couple of weeks, and today really hit the spot! You see, sometimes yoga stresses me out. I know, I know, that’s the opposite effect it’s supposed to have on a person, but I've come to terms with the fact that I’m no yogi and now know that some days, I just don’t have the patience for it and should go with another workout. When it comes to stress-relief, I’m much more of a “sweat it out” kind of person.
This entire week has been pretty successful in terms of workouts, if I do say so myself!
Here’s what I did:
Sunday – rest day (I did do some light stretching and went for a walk)
Monday – 30 Day Shred with Jillian Michaels, level 3 (20 minute circuit workout)
Tuesday – The Workout Girl: Beach Body Workout (30 minute circuit, found here: theworkoutgirl.com/the-b
Wednesday – P90X Kenpo (60 minute kick-boxing video)
Thursday – P90X Yoga (90 minute Vinyasa + balance postures)
And on the program:
Friday – P90X Core (60 minute core-work)
Saturday – 60 minute run
If you can’t tell, I’m a cardio junkie and love my workout videos. Since I don’t have a gym, it’s the most effective way to keep my workouts flowing. Without them, I find myself finishing way too early out of workout boredom.
I’m also not much of a “routine” person. I can’t eat the same meals every day, can’t seem to get to bed at the same hour each night, and I can’t do the same workouts week-after-week. I tend to do things as and when I feel like doing them – after all, variety is the spice of life!
The best thing about today was how early I got my workout out of the way. Now I have time to pack for my weekend in the CITY (translation: my weekend eating GOOD FOOD!!!!), make tortillas for lunch, and do a couple of those DIY recycle-your-clothes projects I saw online!
^^hosting a TACO NIGHT at my house for Beninese friends... not sure they understood why the "bread" (aka tortilla) was so flat!
