Well timed silence hath more eloquence than speech." Martin Franquhar Tupper
This world is a whirlwind of loud annoying sounds. There is the blair of traffic, the constant hum of cell phones going off. People talking, yelling singing. We have the television on 24-7 and the radio blaring in the background.
There is nothing as pleasing after being around all that noise as the sound of silence. Have you ever gone for a walk in the woods and only heard the whisper of the trees?Have you ever been to the ocean far away from the crowds and listened to the magnificence of the majestic water?
On our honeymoon in Hawaii my husband and I found a secluded spot far away from the hotel on a secluded beach. We were jet lagged and tired and just sat admiring the ocean and silence . It was one of my happier moments which was followed by one of my funniest. Our silence and solitude was interrupted by a groundskeeper who told us that we were sitting right in the middle of sand crabs. We had just thanked him when a thousand crabs emerged from the sand all at once all three of us were shrieking and running it was a hoot.
Another of my favorite memories of silence was right after 911. We have a shrine in our church were the communion is kept and people are told they can pray 24-7 with Jesus. I remember going there, the altar was gorgeous. and there were beautiful stained glass windows. I remember kneeling and quietly crying, a women, a total stranger came over to me , she gave me a prayer book from the room and then a little hug and sat with me till the tears stopped.
Sometimes there are no words needed only silence. We all need more silence in our lives I hope you find it when you seek it.
