I have now seen several places where SparkPeople has recommended drinking diet soda - one was in an article about how to avoid gaining weight at college and another was in my daily nutrition feedback when I went over my calorie goals as a suggestion for how to cut calories (and I had not had any soda at all that day).
I'm just baffled that after all the terrible things that this website has to say about artificial sweetners, in general, and diet sodas particularly, that it would recommend substituting diet for regular. I know that regular soda should also be cut from our diets, and perhaps switching to diet can help some people save on calories, but OMG why would you poison your body like that? And why would SP recommend poisoning your body in such a way?!
I gave up diet soda over three years ago. And now, any time I have one without really thinking about it, it makes me sick - I get headaches and I feel crappy for the rest of the day. After these experiences with diet sodas, I'm convinced that they are TERRIBLE for you. And if I had to choose between going over my calories by drinking a regular soda or staying in my range with a diet soda, I think I'd take the regular soda (although I'd prefer water over either of the others)!
Now, don't get me wrong
I really do. But it just seems to go against everything that this site is about - learning to not just eat within your caloric range, but to eat to provide the BEST fuel for your body and learning how to be the most healthful that you can be - to even suggest touching diet soda!
