Friends tend to want to be around each other. They share ideas. They share possessions. They share just about everything. When we are friends of the world, we buy into the ideas of the world. We want worldly possessions. We desire the things the world can give us rather than what God wants to give us. God tells us that if we are friends of the world we are making Him our enemy. That’s pretty strong. Let’s examine our lives today and be sure that we desire godly things rather than worldly possessions.

James 4:4 “Don’t you realize that friendship with the world makes you an enemy of God? I say it again: If you want to be a friend of the world, you make yourself an enemy of God.” (NLT)

Dear Lord, there are so many worldly things around us. It is hard not to see them and it is harder not to desire them. We can’t resist the things of the world on our own. We know we need Jesus in our hearts. We know we need the guidance of the Holy Spirit. We know we need Your word. Help us today to focus on being Your friend rather than a friend of the world. We choose You today, Lord. Thank You for Your patience and love for us. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Every decision makes us a friend of the world or a friend of Jesus.

God wants us to be His friend. We can’t do that if we are focusing on worldly things.

We can’t live in the world and buy into the things of the world and be a friend of God at the same time.

When we desire the things of the world and give into them, we are moving away from God.

We should be a friend of God who stands up for Him and hates the things He hates. When we do that we are being His friend and not a friend of the world.

Psalm 97:10 “You who love the LORD, hate evil! He protects the lives of his godly people and rescues them from the power of the wicked.” (NLT)
