Learned a lot about myself today...

I had an appointment with a personal trainer today (a Scottish gentleman named Ross Gilbert) who really taught me a lot about myself. He was very kind as he explained many things to me that I can do to improve the strength in my legs as I prepare for double knee replacement surgery in a few years.

He helped me see that I need to treat my body as a complete, well oiled unit and maintain it by exercising it as such. He was advocating pure movement that is natural to the body versus exercising isolated muscles using only machines. What he told me made sense to me and made me feel more enthusiastic about my approach to my fitness plan and the tasks I have placed before myself. It was a wonderful session of self-discovery and gleaning knowledge of how to improve my future "healthy" self.

    That sounds awesome. I worked with a trainer for several years after a bad knee injury -- and he focused on what he called 'functional' exercise -- which sounds similar. I can tell you after working with him, all the things I did (like hiking for example) were so drastically improved and quickly too -- I was amazed. So I'm a convert -- I exercise on my own without a trainer anymore, but I do try to focus on functional exercises. I think you get more out of those than the isolated repetitions of many machines.

    Maybe I should have done that before I had my knee replacements, took a long time to get my knee bends.

    have you ever tried yoga or pilates? if so, how has that worked out for you? I see you have previously mentioned some deep water work, that has to provide a lot of fluidity to your movements
