Food for Thought

Tuesday, April 16, 2013

I have just returned from grocery shopping and have a few thoughts to share. First being that I actually enjoyed grocery shopping today. Generally it is very much a chore for me but our lives have been so hectic lately that we have done a lot of dining out so I am anxious to begin cooking for ourselves again. I would like to state that I feel as though eating out is even going well! I have made some great choices and potion control is getting so much easier. It takes a lot less to feel full! Anywho, back to the subject at hand. I spent $112 dollars on today's trip. That got us the makings for 8 meals (Some will even have left overs) not including breakfasts as we had that on hand already and lots of varieties of healthy snacks. We shop organics on all options possible, so for those who think they can't live the green lifestyle because of the expense, think again!! What a bargain. If we had $112 to spend on eating out, we might get 4, maybe five meals and that wouldn't include snacks!

On another note, we were in the bread aisle today. We don't buy many bread products because we love our bread machine so we rarely venture here, but today we wanted to buy some burger buns. I walked past a loaf of bread advertising that they didn't use high fructose corn syrup. We avoid this at all costs and can generally peg products that would likely use it. But this shocked me. BREAD? What is the need for it in bread? It got me to thinking about the buns we buy. I never have thought to look for it there, it just didn't make sense to. Sure enough. High Fructose Corn Syrup. Needless to say we will be looking for a new brand of buns! Any suggestions out there?

Okay, enough of a rant. I am off to put the binding on a baby quilt so that I can get it in the mail today!

You can make your own buns by mixing your bread recipe in your bread maker, but removing the dough before baking. Shape as desired and bake in the oven.

That stupid High Fructose Corn Syrup is in all sorts of things where you would NEVER expect to find it..and as you said for the bread/buns...WHY?
