"Extreme obesity the new normal"

Tuesday, April 16, 2013

I'm going to link two articles. www.theage.com.au/nation
al/health/extreme-obesity-
the-new-normal-20130411-2h
o3h.html
Extreme obesity the new normal. The article is wrong and right. Extreme obesity is still pretty rare, but normal in most eyes is what is defined by BMI as overweight or on the border of normal and overweight. Someone in the middle of the normal range looks thin to most people.

People see me as thin. My BMI is normal. This site calculates your Body Mass Index and compares it to other Americans with a similar age and height. For my weight, age and height I'm at the 6th percentile meaning 94 percent of women my age and height are heavier than I. www.halls.md/body-mass-i

I don't know what to think about this. Comments, please.

This is absolutely true and society is paying the price for it. We have had to re-engineer all kinds of things from furniture to hospital equipment to buses just to handle the increased weight.

It's interesting that the study had to actually weigh the participants and not depend on their self reported weight. Avoiding the scale to avoid bad news is common so people don't really know what they weigh. You can't tell from clothing sizes either. They keep making them bigger too.

You're right. With a BMI of 28, I feel like I am at least of a normal weight. My goal is now to lose another 30 lbs. but according to the calculators you pointed to, I could lose 60 lbs. and still be in the healthy range. I saw a discussion of the Kenyan marathoners yesterday and they are generally around my height and weigh around 120 lbs. Those I have seen certainly look slim, but they do not look unhealthily so.
