I Will Not Blink First

First, a little history. In November, I fell on the lawn while wheeling out the recycling bin. About a week later, started to have discomfort in foot and knee. Researched the areas of pain for anatomy and where pain occurred. Determined what was the most likely injury to both affected areas. Having no insurance and no surplus funds outside of bill paying, treated my discomfort with ice, heat, rest, elevation, compression, custom aromatherapy mixture. Foot slowly got better but the knee seemed to get to a point of recovery and would go no farther.

Recently, had stumbled badly, but did not fall, and then couple days later had to run short distance as being chased by a bee. The pain in the knee increased. And increased. Sunday, 04-06-2013, was 1 of 2 days that week that will change my path. After sitting, getting up and trying to walk generated unbelievable pain from my knee. Any weight on my knee was unbearable. After numerous calls over two days, decided to go to Orthopedist as did give me a firm cost.

Day 2 of 2 path change: the diagnosis was severe osteoarthritis in my knee. The doctor felt that the fall and other incidence just aggravated the knee. He started laying out a plan of physical therapy and office visits and recommended weight loss. I explained that I had no insurance and limited funds. I reminded him that the Affordable Care Act is effective 01-01-14 and can pick an insurance plan 10-01-13. His response was "good, you'll need a knee replacement by then." He recommended Aleve, weight loss and that I get a cane. I did get a shot of cortisone in the knee. He did his 7 minute average patient time and I was written off. Well, he did say to call in a month to let him know how I was doing.

With everyday life issues, concentrating on weight loss was haphazard on good days. I know the great, good and bad food choices but selected what was easiest and quickest. It is now critical that I pay attention to my body-period. I don't feel that I was written off by the doctor, his hands were tied by my financial limitations.

I will not have limits or boundaries. Knowledge is power. A positive attitude is essential. I will not succumb to changing my life for a pain in the knee. My Life List includes hiking parts of the Appalachian Trail, walking tours in Alaska, hiking down the Grand Canyon, hiking other great national parks and running a 5K or maybe even a marathon. I have a walking stick used in past hikes and that is good enough for my needs for what I have planned.

None of us really know our future. We can only plan our route and keep moving forward. There will be pot holes and speed bumps ahead, just hang on. In the movie "All About Eve" the infamous line from Bette Davis ""Fasten your seat belts, it's going to be a bumpy night" is about my life and your life, reader.
