Worst challenge at work

Voted Popular Blog Post: View All Popular Posts

I work at a desk job, so snacking is a really bad habit, especially when sitting on my butt all day. But the real challenge at work is filling up the candy jars. Believe it or not, but i have to fill them up a few times a day. (everyone in the office is addicted to sweets) So this is what i have to look at everyday at work, a few times a day. It is very hard to stay away from it, BUT i have made one of my desk drawers (used to be my candy drawer) my healthy snack drawer. Okay so it's not really healthy snacks but better than candy. It's filled with Fiber one brownies, Motts fruit snacks, granola bars, peanuts, and sometimes i buy a dark chocolate candy bar and eat one little piece of it per day. (so i try to make it last me a week). Now if only i could do the same thing at home....
Hope everyone has a wonderful Monday

We do have the biggest loser competition once a year. So everybody cuts back on the candy and "bad" food. But as soon as the competition is over, the bad habits would return for most. One of our employees exercise regularly (she's the one who got me doing P90X) and it almost started to spread lol, a few employees tried P90X, but never stuck with it.

That is so challenging! Good luck! I know what that is like! I worked at a hotel that I had to fill candy jars several times a day! WOW!

Are there people at work that would be willing to start a weight loss/healthy choices challenge? The snacks and pot lucks were a huge issue with me at work. I started my journey on Monday, February 4 (doesn't it always happen on a Monday?!) and by Friday I had everyone in my office signed up for a weight loss challenge I created. It was great for me as I'm very competitive too! We are nearing the end of week 10, and the six of us have dropped over 80 lbs! Not too shabby considering only 2 of us were overweight/obese!! So I have shed nearly 50 lbs., we have had no sweets in the office, and two healthy potlucks! (a salad bar and chicken taco bar) Fridays are super exciting for us, because it is weigh in day. Message me if you are interested in the challenge/rules. I made up a 12 week challenge, and people got to sign up for the parts they wanted to do. Weight loss, healthy choices, and/or exercise. It is a savings plan for yourself if you do everything you are supposed to. If not, you have to pay everyone else! I have over $90 in my jar! Good luck!

My company switched to packets of dried fruit, trailmix, fruit leather, unsalted nuts, and granola bars. That "candy" jar still empties in less than an hour just like it did when they stocked it with mini candy bars. They also buy bananas, apples and oranges for a fruit bowl and those go almost as fast.

I think people just eat it because it's free.

It wouldn't hurt to make a suggestion to try healthier options. If people complain you could do it every other day with the sugar snacks.

You might not be the only one wishing there were more options.

Good job resisting! I like that you planned ahead.

Thanks, i dont buy the candy, someone else does, and i just fill the jars up. But if i did buy it, i would def find healthier choices. I do make a lot of comments whenever someone grabs a lot of candy. (not really mean ones or anything) but just something to make them think twice about how much they grab. Or i will pull out the bag and tell them just how many calories and sugars are in certain candy, and which ones are a little healthier. (we have lots of mints and hard candies too) But it's their health not mine. emoticon

Have you tried replacing your candy with apples or pears or bananas? Ok maybe not bananas they ripen too quickly but something thats a little longer lasting and healthier? I used to have a cupboard where I worked where I'd keep things like that and then every day i'd bring carrots or celery this way when the others were eating the non healthy foods I could grab something too... But it looks like you are off to a great start and good luck.

You are doing great! That really makes me worry about everyone else in the workplace, though, knowing what they are doing to their bodies by going through junk that quickly. I never would have thought of that before I started being more mindful of my own health, but egads that is a lot of nasty sugar getting consumed!

Sounds like you are doing a good job resisting. I have the same problem. One of the spots where food is left is literally right in front of my desk. I have gotten much better at resisting. One thing I do is drink a lot of decaf. (herbal) flavored tea. This helps me get in my water for the day, and gives me some flavor so I feel like I'm getting a treat. emoticon

I really ballooned up working at a desk. And we have to work...
But Since I could not stop eating at my desk and had to stay there most of the day, my health took a nose dive... I feel better making less money but working on my feet.
I don't eat at work most days, don't eat snacks there, I got out during my breaks and walked. It was hard but the results are starting to show.
I encourage you to keep making small consistent changes.
Keep fighting the good fight =)

I give you a lot of credit. Good idea about your own snack drawer.

We often have people bringing in donuts, bagels, and cookies too. And we have a lot of events, such as chili & soup contest, and everyone brings a dish for sporting events. Then we have a pop machine and a "snack shack" which is full of chips, candybars, popcorn and lots of other junk at very cheap prices.

BUT the boss does buy lots of fruit (every Monday), wheat bread, PB, hot cocoa, Tea and water that is free, so if i ever forget to bring breakfast, i have some healthy options.

I know exactly what you are saying. I worked for a company for five years that had a snack room where everything was free and none of it was healthy. The pounds went on and were hard to get off.

I wish you well in this endeavor. I know how hard it is to resist snacking in an office, especially if you are responsible for filling the candy dishes. My weakness is vending machines.

I can so relate! I work in an office that seems to have never ending snacks in the kitchen. We even have "bagel and cookie day". The kitchen is right outside my office door - so I smell the snacks all day long. I did the same thing you have done. It has saved me multiple times (occassionally I still cave in). I have almonds, dark chocolate, a few 100 calorie snack packs.... We can do this!!!!! emoticon emoticon
