3 Weeks at Maintenance... sort of.

March 23rd, I officially hit my goal of 130 pounds. I spent time basking in the glow of that accomplishment - 29 pounds gone.

I didn't change my eating right away. I thought I'd lose bit more so every ounce gained wouldn't panic me. I easily got down to 128. I had been eating about 1200 calories a day since November.

Watermellen has a rule of thumb that says 10 calories daily per pound she wants to keep. I began to transition to maintenance by eating 1300 calories a day, but I kept losing weight. I got down to 126.6.

I upped the calories to about 1420 a day (which is what Sparkpeople recommends for me) and gained weight back to 127.8 in a day. Hmmm.

I liked being 126ish. It took 3 days to get back there. I seem to need more than 1300 and less than 1420 calories at my current activity level. It's a balancing act at which I am not yet proficient.

I changed my goal weight to 129, so I could say I'd lost 30 pounds. I've actually lost 32.5 :-) I've changed my ticker to a range with 129 in the center.

My daughter's upcoming June wedding gives me extra motivation to keep this weight and learn the balancing act. By the time I've been at it for 2 more months, I might have learned enough to keep it up forever. Wish me luck...

You are doing a great job of learning about yourself in maintenance. You will be a beautiful mother of the bride. It helps me to have a 3 pound range to keep me on track.

Congratulations on reaching your goal and keeping it!

You're going to look fantastic at the wedding!! We'll want to see pictures of the dress (yours!!). The maintenance thing is tricky and I think it's all about careful monitoring but also expecting some fluctuation with various factors: salt/fluid retention etc. etc. The 10 calories a pound might be light for you: my metabolism is (sigh) super efficient!!

I agree with Slenderella, you have figured out a lot FAST. The trainer at the Fitness Center said she thought I was eating too low averaging 1400 calories. She said she thought whenever I ate more my body "grabbed and held" those extra calories.

All I know is I am totally confused about how much I should be eating. Maybe I'll try the 10 calories/pound and see what happens.

But you are doing so well! I know you will be a gorgeous Mother of the Bride!!!

I think you are doing incredibly!! You have figured out a great deal so fast. Good for you!! I've been maintaining 4 years and still don't totally have it down as to how much I should eat when to maintain. Guess part of that is because I'm spending far more time trying to lose a pound or two due to slips than truly trying to maintain. Anyway, I'm very impressed with your progress! I predict you will do maintenance very well. -Marsha
