Thank you, GETSTRONGRRR of 50+ Males for naming the demon that was making it easy for me to postpone exercise! The Suck. The devious, insidious, deleterious *bleeping* Suck.
But I bucked The Suck today.
I knew I had to get in some miles or I'd *never* be ready for my 10K event in a week. So I dutifully changed, warmed up and began dreadmilling.
I hurt. The Suck said, "Better not exercise today. It kind of hurts, maybe you still need some healing time from the last workout." I just kept on slogging, "try for 5 more minutes" I cajoled.
I started to get out of breath. The Suck said "Better quit now--what if you're overdoing it?" I just kept on slogging, "try for another 5 minutes" I cajoled again.
My chest started to feel tight. The Suck said, "This could be dangerous. You really should quit." I just kept slogging, "try for just another 5 minutes . . .," I cajoled, "you can quit if you want to after 5 more minutes."
Then it happened: my muscles hurt less. My breath came easy. My chest felt perfectly normal. "Bleep off, Suck!" I said. "I'm going the full 50 minutes and then I'm going to keep going till I hit 5k."
I bucked that Suck today and I'm going to buck it again tomorrow and I'm going to buck it again at least one more day before we leave for Sun Run city, Vancouver, mid-week.
I'm a bleepin' Suck Bucker and I like that!
