Here I am AT LAST

Hi all.

Monday afternoon our computer crashed. Thankfully DH is a techie and has been fixing computers all his working life. It took a LOT of time and we still had to run the house and shop etc. DH does all the cooking and some of the cleaning. He is also my grocery shopper until I get my walker so I can go too. Anyway, He had it better by Wednesday night and I was able to read a few of my 325 emails!!!! I was also able to login and get some Spark pints. Thursday just emails and Spark points and now finally today I am up and running again. I hope that never happens again. Thankfully HE was on the computer when it crashed and not ME!!!

Lots has happened this week and many changes are taking place around and about me. I had decided to only weigh myself once a month for a while as weighing in each week was stressing me. Then on Tuesday afternoon I went to get results of my bloodwork and xrays. This was not a good thing, as the office called me and said the doctor wanted to see me. He never wants to tell me anything good, so I knew I was in trouble. First, as was the case last year, my Uric acid id high. I have already been following the list of foods not to have often so we feel my weight is causing the issue. I have to be on the watch for Gout , of all things. My bone density is the same, low, and I continue to take calcium. He wants me to do some more strengthening exercises to help build my bones up so I am seeing the phsyotherapist starting monday afternoon. I guess I will at least be getting out of the apartment more but it is difficult because I don't have my walker yet and it is a 10-15 minute walk from the bus. I will do it and be glad of the therapy. My back and hip xrays show osteoarthritis in each and the physio will address this also. As for the pain, well, I can only take x strength Tylenol for pain, so it will be what it is. Then came the shocking news. I am boarderline diabetic! I have never had any trouble with high sugar before and I am just a touch of the boarder. He has put me on the G. I. Diet. Glycemic Index. DH and I used to follow that diet on our own and we both lost weight and felt great. DH went into the Doctors room with me so he is well aware of the urgency of the issue. I am to have NO SUGAR. In any form. The diet lowers your blood sugars and balances them out. It is a bit carb restrictive but only those from grains mostly. I cannot have bananas, kiwi, melon or pineapple. I also have to restrict beets, corn, most root vegetables and keep my saturated fat very low. I can have nearly every veggie and fruit going as well as low fat and lean meats and low or fatfree dairy. SOunds tough but it is quite simple to follow and suits our lifestyle well. I also have to take my BP twice a day and weighin every week. I have to go to his office every month for bloodwork and to be weighed. He is so serious, thank goodness!

And so that is what I have been up to. We start the diet Tuesday after shopping for the new foods we need. I have already cut out all sugar and am quite nervous to be going out to dinner on Saturday. I will have to choose really well.

Sorry if anyone thought I had given up as I was in such a mess earlier on. I have started to take the stairs here in the apartment when going to mom's or outside. It should help me and it is not as bad on my back as I thought it would be. No pain more or less.

SO glad to have you back and with the computer fixed, handy DH !

You can do this and get your body and blood work under control. Given a challenge from your doctor will cause you to rise to the occasion. Yeah you on the no sugar I know that you have worked hard on this one.
And congratulations on getting into physical therapy to help with your movement and strength training.

    Welcome back! Glad you got your computer up and running so you can join us once again!

That is fantastic that you and hubby are familiar with the low glycemic index diet and have a great advantage in getting started without learning a whole new program. I'll bet as you get going with this new food plan you will find so many more things falling into place for your healthy lifestyle. It is all connected and you are going to start connecting the dots to good health!!

Kudos on taking the stairs and the challenging walk from the bus stop. You are doing great! emoticon

    Gini, Your blog is similar to my story and where I'm at. I am already type 2 diabetic so it's good you'll be on the GI diet. I wish you well as being diabetic isn't any fun at all as you know. I'm also sorry to say I have osteoarthritis and my Dr. says my bones are weak so I also take calcium and Foasamax RX. It sounds good that you'll be doing some bone strengthening exercises. Please let me know what you do for exercise to strengthen emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon your bones as I should be doing them also. I hope weighing in once a month works out well with no surprises or stress. Keep fighting the good fight to get healthier. I think your plan sounds great and I know you can do this. Take good care of yourself.

    glad your computer is fixed and your husband fixed it- my husband says he works on computers all day so not to bother him when he gets home. My older son is a computer major and he just thinks I am clueless- which I am really not.

Good luck with your eating plan- my husband has been diabetic for years and is now going on an insulin pump- he is very resistant about changing how he eats. My mom is borderline and they have her on consistent carb at the rehab/nursing home. My sisterinlaw is newly diagnosed and is so confused- she has been told completely opposite things by her dr and the nutritionist. It seems like it should be a little more straight forward so people don't get frustrated and give up.

Glad you can work on these things with your husband- it makes life so much easier if you are going in the same direction!

    Wow, that is some wake-up call from the doctor! I am glad your husband will be on board; it's always easy when everyone in the household is on the same page. I know that if you take all of your doctor's recommendations seriously you will be well on your way to better health. You can do it!

    Glad you are up and running Ginilee. My hubby and I have been diabetic for about 10 years. You can do this. I never have been told no pineapple or melons though. It is good that you catch it while you are only borderline.

    Glad you're up and running. I have had computer issues too since March 20th. I'm finally back online with Spark as of this past Wednesday. Apparently my old internet service blocked Spark while I was online and the only access I had was limited on my phone.
Good luck with the GI diet. I'm diabetic and it's always a battle. I'm basically on a consistent carb diet which is fine except when I exercise my blood sugars drop. So you need to watch for that. Good luck with all your other endeavors.
