Great news! We won the fight to end the use of antibiotics in organic apple and pear production!

Friday, April 12, 2013

With the comments from thousands of Food & Water Watch supporters like you, and the work with our allies like Consumers Union, the Center for Food Safety and others, we were able to convince the Organic Standards Board not to extend the use of the antibiotic tetracycline beyond 2014 for fruit production.

This is a great victory for all of us who want to make sure that organic standards stay strong, and to stop the overuse of antibiotics. Over 80% of antibiotics used in the U.S. are currently used in agriculture. This is contributing to antibiotic-resistant bacteria, which are making people sick. We're going to continue working in both of these areas and we hope you'll continue to stand with us.

Thank you for your continued support,

That's great news, but I'm wondering if they're just going to replace tetracycline with a different antibiotic?
