Today I will be reviewing SparkPeople’s new book, “The Spark Solution: A Complete Two-Week Diet Program to Fast-Track Weight Loss and Total Body Health” by Becky Hand, R.D. and Stepfanie Romine. Chef Meg Galvin created the recipes and Coach Nicole Nichols designed the workouts. Chris “SparkGuy” Downie wrote the introduction.
Oh my goodness! What a wonderful, comprehensive book that details two weeks that can change someone’s life! From advice from actual Spark success stories (including yours truly) to delicious recipes to great workouts, this book has it all!
One of my favorite parts of the book is how encouraging it would be to a person just starting their journey. The book talks about how this is changing your lifestyle not a short-term diet and is broken down step by step. I believe it is so important to keep it simple and have the idea of a lifestyle change pounded into your brain. This lifestyle is NOT temporary.

The recipes were actually really good. I’ve tried a lot of ‘diet’ recipes (Hungry Girl, for one) that just don’t taste like what I am craving so I still end of craving (and usually eating the full calorie version. The recipes in the book are the real deal. The first recipe I tried was called Thai Peanut Noodles. It tasted like a delicious satisfying Thai dish. And the kicker here is the serving size is TWO HEAPING CUPS for 391 calories!! I couldn’t even eat a full serving! It was so good! We also tried the Southwestern Chicken and Rice. It was just like the Chipotle bowl I normally order (I added cilantro to the rice.) I think this book would be worth buying for the recipes included. They are that good!
The workouts are terrific. They have photos for the strength workout and a fitness plan, which includes exactly what to do for two weeks. If I were just starting (or jumping back on the Spark Train,) I would definitely be encouraged by the fact that for at least two weeks I know exactly what I need to do for each day. After the two weeks, the book has two more weeks (plus a rest of your life section) of encouragement and a general idea of what to do. I think this would be helpful because it is almost like the book is weaning you to be able to figure out what to eat and how to move your body.
I didn’t follow the two-week meal plan but I think it would be great for someone who had no idea where to start or how to cook tasty, healthy food. Each day there is an Insider tip, Mindset Makeover tip and Motivation Makeover tip. I think these are very inspiring. I especially think it would be motivating to read a tip from someone who has used SparkPeople and had success. I absolutely loved reading the Insider Tips from other successful SparkPeople members! Plus, it was fun to see my tips in the actually book! At the end of each day, the book has a spot to reflect on the day. I think this would be very beneficial. It would be awesome to look back on your first two weeks as you progress on your journey.
The Bottom-Line: Would I recommend this to a friend?
Yes! I have actually already told several people about the book! I love SparkPeople and I truly believe, Chris Downie and his employees, genuinely care about the success of their members. This book is no different. It is written in a way that is easy to follow and has success written all over it.
