Tornado season

Wednesday, April 10, 2013

We started out with a really nice day today. Warm, partially sunny & gentle breezes.

I had been home about two hours when the tornado alarms started going off. We didn't have a tornado coming through the area - we had two of them. Then they changed south county to severe thunderstorm warnings. I had LOTS of rain & LOTS of wind. I really hate hearing those sirens. I was glad to be out of the tornado path, but that didn't mean I wanted anyone else in the middle of it.

One of the tornadoes hit out by the airport. They just had to rebuild part of the airport two years ago because of tornado damage. They moved all the passengers to shelters. The tornado didn't hit the airport, but did a lot of damage near it. From what I hear, Hazelwood got the worst of it in St. Louis county. I have several friends who live in the area & just got all the damage repaired from the tornado two years ago.

The other tornado hit by Forest Park, a 1,370 acre park that contains the zoo, art museum, history museum, Muny theater & other attractions. Haven't heard of any damage in the park, but there is damage in the surrounding neighborhoods.

There was a lot of damage in the area about an hour from my house where some of my in-laws live. There is also a lot of power outages in that county & in St. Louis.

We go through this every year. Makes me wonder why I look forward to spring so much.

DEEEBEE, a friend called me this evening who apparently lives in your friend's area. Her house wasn't damaged, but those of some neighbors were. Her one neighboring family was trapped in their home & couldn't get out because of fallen trees. They had to be rescued.

One of my brothers-in-law lives in a trailer in Villa Ridge, one of the first places hit. I tried to call to check on him but his phone continued giving me a busy signal. Then I called a niece in Washington & she said they had him at their house. His trailer is still without power this evening.

It really was a shame about the Ameren worker. That's such a dangerous job.

I called a friend who lives near Howdershell and Lynn Haven. She is wheelchair bound and so she took refuge in her bathroom with a pillow over her head. Her daughter went to the basement. They felt their house shake. This is the same tornado pattern as two years ago, but 5 miles to the north of us instead of two as in 2011. It was a blessing that people were injured only slightly...until today when an Ameren worker was electrocuted. So sad, especially when he was helping people.

I live in St. Peters and it was a scary night of wind and rain and sirens! I feel so blessed today that my property and loved ones are all good! Prayers go out to those who were affected.
