Sugar Tooth Ramble

Wednesday, April 10, 2013

I haven't been around much, because I went to visit my grandmother with my sister AMYLONGHORN. Grandma's birthday was on Sunday, and it was really great to see her and make her happy and really hard to see how she's declining and then leave her. My heart hurt so badly as we closed the door behind us the last time, knowing on the other side, she was sitting alone. Still quite hurts thinking about it.

I haven't gotten any exercise this week with the visit. Also, something somewhere on the trip really messed up my stomach and I'm still feeling the effects, worse than before. I left work early today because of it and spent the day on the couch, writing letters, drinking tea, and eating bananas, applesauce and toast.

The applesauce was unsweetened. I asked my husband to get it that way. He said there was only one brand of unsweetened, and he was nervous about it, but it is delicious. I'm not craving sugar the last couple days, but I'm also not craving much of anything at this time. I should go to a doctor, but trying to find one was maddening. All the GPs I called didn't have appointments until May. If I'm still feeling bad tomorrow, I guess I'll bite the bullet and go to an urgent care clinic.

I think Kristen had a valid point about the diet soda. I gave up pop for a couple weeks and then was back on the sauce. I do need to quit it. Maybe I should do it soon...but I don't wish to cut down until my stomach is back to normal, since I heard somewhere that cola does better than lemon-lime soda for your tummy because of the caramel coloring. But I do think this should be my next big tackle.

I can relate to the feelings surrounding having to leave a loved one - knowing that they are alone & that it just might be the last time we see them in this lifetime.

I hope that you call your Grandmother often.

Ginger ale & saltine crackers are great when one is dealing with an upset stomach.

    God bless!

ugh, hope your tummy feels better.. I drink seltzer water.. transitioned by adding a little juice or powdered lemon aid, but now I just like it unflavored!
Ah, grandmas. Mine lived alone for years and kind of liked it that way. When she had to go to a nursing home it was hard, but then she became a social butterfly! But that need for indepedance is something else all together. My advice, call her often, even for just a brief hello, how's your day? It will make you both feel connected.
    hugs, and feel better!

Brenda, did you two fly out to San Francisco again, to see your grandmother? I remember when you went the last time. I am also in CA for a couple of days with a group of 8 ladies.
I can so understand your sadness, and I am glad you and Amy made the trip. It must have meant the world to her, and she was probably wondering, like you, if she will ever see her two granddaughters again. Drop her a note, or send her a card, once in awhile.
Take care of your stomach problems. I always thought it was Gingerale or 7 UP that helped stomach upsets.

It took we over six months to cut out my daily six pack of diet soda. I have a very bad caffine addiction. I'm glad I took the time. Get well soon.

As a grandma myself, I'm REALLY glad you & Amy went to see yours! Even though it made you sad at the end, it doubtless meant the world to her.

Yay for losing your need for sugar!!! emoticon But please get better soon. emoticon emoticon
