Read John 8.
This whole chapter is a lot of verbal fencing. The religious leaders are trying to trick Him into saying something that they can use against Him. Jesus is telling them essentially the same thing through the chapter but they do not get it, He speaks of 'The Father', and all the leaders can think of is the patriarch Abraham. He gives clues through the whole chapter, every word is carefully thought out but still there is no understanding. That is the nature of the bible, without the spirit of God, the Holy Spirit to give us understanding, the bible becomes just words and stories. These people could not understand because they were not lead by the spirit. The discourse continues back and forth with accusations and a few insults until finally Jesus tells them flat out that He is God; "Truly truly I say to you, before Abraham was, I am." Then they get it, Jesus uses the name God gave Moses on the mountain, declaring Himself to be God, I AM!. And the Jews not being able to accept this believe it blasphemy and seek to stone Him.
