I certainly have my work cut out for me! I can understand soreness associated with healing and strengthening my shoulder/arm but was shocked that my right thigh muscle was so tight today. Yesterday I rode the recumbent cycle at the Y, at low resistance and low speed, for 45 minutes. I never expected to be sore today. I never even broke a sweat! My guess is that the ride worked the muscles but my center of gravity is also off, putting extra pressure on my right side. I was aware of the stress on my right leg today when I did my three "at home" physical therapy sessions. So most likely, the soreness is caused by a number of factors. One, I was unable to work out for close to six weeks before I used the recumbent cycle. I have definitely lost a lot of muscle tone. Two, my right side is on "overload" trying to keep my body balanced. Three, I am having a difficult time finding positions to stretch my legs that do not involve leaning on my upper body or using the upper body for balance. Last, my sleep is constantly interrupted during the night due to pain and muscle spasms. Lack of deep sleep causes my whole body - including my muscles - to tire more quickly and be prone to muscle soreness.
I didn't work out today other than to do my physical therapy routines. Tomorrow, I will make another attempt at slowly riding the recumbent cycle. I am doing slow workouts until my body adjusts to working out again and until I am healed.
