What is Sciatica?

"Sciatica (pronounced sai-AT-ti-ka) is the name given to any pain stemming from the irritation of the sciatic nerve. Anything that irritates this nerve can cause pain that ranges from mild to severe; usually, from a compressed nerve root in the lumbar (lower) spine. Often, the term "sciatica" is confused with general back pain. However, sciatica is not just limited to the back.

The sciatic nerve is the longest and widest nerve in the human body. It runs from the lower back, through the buttocks, and down the legs, ending just below the knee. This nerve controls several muscles in the lower legs and allows that area to be sensitive to touch.

Sciatica is not, in fact, a condition, but rather a symptom of another problem involving the sciatic nerve. "

Sciatica is a b@_%#^&*!!! You have my sympathy! I had it during a and after my two pregnancies and I have some permanent nerve damage (dead spots in my toes) and I am still struggling with muscle weakness on my right side. Physical therapy has been enormously useful, and staying as active (as possible) has really paid off in terms of pain reduction.

Last week I was sent for an X-ray on the tail bone and sciatic area. No results yet.
For a year, I have been gingerly sitting very forward to allow less pressure on the tailbone. Riding a bike last summer was a delicate balancing act.

I have never had back or bottom pain before... and I want to get to the bottom of this.

I hope the tips start helping everyone on the new team!

Ya know, I don't think my pain is sciatica, it's arthritis. But I applaud your plan to get people who struggle with a challenge together for support!
