Read John 7.
God established in Deuteronomy three feasts at which all males were required to attend, they were passover, weeks or harvest, and tabernacles. So the first part of this really makes little sense.
Jesus as a male Jew was required to be at the feast, as a rabbi He would certainly be expected.
It is strange that His brothers accepted His excuse to not go. It is also understandable that He wanted to go anonymously. God is walking amongst His people incognito, seeing what they do, listening to what they say, experiencing their lives with them. Then mid way through He goes to the temple and begins to teach. This is sort of like undercover boss, the difference though is that when Jesus reveals who He is, the workers reject Him.
