John 6. Cannibalism? Really?

Monday, April 08, 2013

Read John 6.

The bread of life and living water. This had to be really strange for the Jews to hear Jesus say that they had to eat His flesh and drink His blood. The Jewish culture has strict prohibitions against consuming blood, and cannibalism was revolting. We know that Jesus was not being literal, but imagine being in that place, with no knowledge of the established 'last supper'. Here is a rabbi, many believe He is the messiah yet now he speaks about eating flesh and drinking blood, more than a bit weird. They did not understand, and I think that was intentional. What I find interesting is that they don't ask Jesus to explain, simply thinking that He may have lost it. How quickly people can change their minds, just days before they followed Him around the sea to witness miracles, now they think He has lost His mind. Even the twelve that He chose do not get it, but in their defense Peter at least has the right answer. Jesus has the words of eternal life, He is the Holy One of God. Even if I do not understand anything else that is all that is important, Jesus has the words of eternal life.
