Sneaky sodium!

One of my goals is to limit my sodium intake to under 2000 mg each day. I don't have high blood pressure yet, but I've always been on the high end of normal. High blood pressure runs in my family, I'm overweight, and I'm on birth control (which also increases blood pressure!)...not a good combination! So along with tracking my calories on SP, I'm also tracking my sodium.

There is so much hidden sodium in the food we eat! I was shocked today to see that I'd gone over my limit even though I had yet to eat my daily allowance of calories. And guess where it came from...processed salsa! I was so surprised! I used to be on Weight Watchers, where salsa was considered a "free" food-- I never used to count salsa when I was on Weight Watchers so I assumed it was harmless and low-cal. There are 1000mg of sodium in a half cup of Tostitos salsa! That was half my daily sodium goal right there!

Not sure if other people are keeping an eye out for sodium but this was definitely a sneaky place to find a bunch of it! I'm going to try chopping my own tomatoes and sauteeing some onions for homemade salsa next time :)

Hope everyone's having a great day! Just finished a whole hour of yoga (The Biggest Loser Weight Loss Yoga DVD-- woohoo!) and I'm feeling great!

    Homemade salsa is SO much better than commercial.... and homemade pico de gallo is the best!

  It is very sneaky!

I have a really hard time keeping my sodium down - I eat a lot of veggie 'meats' which are all really high in salt content. Unfortunately it's a very hard thing to get down... but keep at it! Good luck.

    It is hard to keep the sodium intake down because it is in so much processed foods. It will take you some time to read lables and figure out which foods you should stay away from. You can do it and thanks for sharing so others can be aware.

    My biggest surprise when I started with SP and started tracking my food was the amount of sodium I was consuming. I always thought I was watching it, but also was surprised by the foods which had sodium.
