Inspiration to Go the distance!

My husband and I are on our way back home from his first ever triathlon! I am so proud of him and inspired by him! To understand why I'm inspired by this I need to go back a bit. My husband and I met and were married in Germany back in the 1984! At the time we were in our early twenties both in the military and both fairly fit! Him more than me. My husband has been fairly athletic most of his life. In high school he had swam competively and had broken some high school and state records! By the time we met in Germany though he had settled more into weight lifting and push up and pull up types of work outs. He did some biking, too. and of course we had to always run our yearly Physical training test. Fast forward a few years and we are both out of the military, I've had 3 kids gained and lost more weight then I can remember. But mostly he has stayed fairly well in shape having gaining some weight but not a ton. He went in to the so he had to stay at a fairly consistent weight and fitness level. Then we hit some hard financial times and had to move, he changed jobs and the hours he pulled trying to get us out of the financial hole didn't give him the time to continue with the military reserves or to maintain his fitness level as he liked. He made excuses like "My job is a work out". And to a point it was true. H did a lot of heavy lifting and climbing on steel structures , etc for his job as a welder. Pile driver. Yet he was not doing any kind of cardio workouts like biking or swimming, or running. In a few years time he had gain some weight and was starting to experience some issues, plantar's fasciris, occasionally stress induced High blood pressure. We had finally got back on our feet financially when his frequent lay offs in the construction industry began to last longer and longer. He was now 220 lbs and about 5'9". Which may not seem to bad to some one else but to him it was he was at his worst fitness level ever. He began using his frequent lay offs to try and get in shape again. But he did mostly ups, pull ups and a few sit ups along with not eating as much. He was also looking around for some other kind of career as we were getting tired of the lay offs all the time. I suggested two things to him 1). Go into anything in the medical field as it seemed to be the fastest growing industry right then and 2). Go back into the military reserves to finish out his retirement. With all his lay offs and me being a stay at home mom we had put absolutely nothing away for retirement. He decided to look into it and went back in to the military getting training as a combat medic in the Army reserves at 46 years old. he was over the weight standard and had to work on dropping some weight which he didby just controlling his food intake. Still at just under 200 lbs and doing all muscle type workouts he had to be "taped" to squeeze by the army standards for weight. They tape some one when they think that the weight is actually attributed to muscle instead of fat and give them a waiver to get in. It was a rude awakening for him when he had to do his 1st Run for physical training. He quickly realised that He was out of shape and ill prepared for the run. He pulled. Calf muscle and barely hobbled in to the finish line under the time required. The next day he could barely walk and he only had a few weeks before he had to go to soldier's training - - the equivalent of basic trainsg for soldiers who change services (he went from Air Force to Army). He added running on to his workouts. At first he could barely run a few blocks . But he was in better shape than he was and did make it through his training. Once he came back he continued working out and within Few months was asked if he wanted to go to more training. they needed a Occupational therapist in their reserve unit and wanted to know if he wanted to do that. He agreed and went to training again. The whole 8 months he was away in training he was able to improve on his fitness level. He came back and was really looking and feeling better. He was deployed to Afghanistan for nearly a year. When he got back he began working as a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant as a civilian and working with long term crate patient's opened his eyes and solidified his determination to not let his physical body decline. We moved to WA, taking a job with another long term care facility. This is where he was challenged by coworkers to enter the Beaver freezer triathalon being held at Oregon University. He agreed and began swimming and running to get in shape. He's only hope at 52 years old was to "just finish". He finally got a bike three weeks before the race and started biking back and forth to work. To say I am proud of him and inspired by him is an understatement. He swam 500yards (20 lengths or 10 laps) in the pool, rode 12 miles on his bike, and ran a 5k! I am inspired to do something with myself! I have a myriad of aches and pains the most painful and debilitating being plantars fasciitis which my doctor says is directly related to my excess weight. I Am going to school, working full time, but If I can just get myself out of bed In the morning then I could work out and lose some of this weight. So that is my commitment to myself over the next 6 weeks JUST 6 weeks I will commit to getting up at 4:45 am and going to the Y to exercise for only 30 mins 5 days a week. Let me see what happens with just this one commitment.
