Today we woke up when our bodies wanted to wake up. So nice! Meandered down to breakfast at the hotel. Saw a few folks from our group. Ken and Linda came by and said if there was a group of at least six, the hotel would give everyone a ride to wherever they wanted to go in town.
After we ate, Dan stayed and spoke with Larry Jobe while I got on the computer to check email and work on yesterday’s blog. Dan came up and said there is a group going to use the hotel vehicle. We need to be in the lobby at 10:30.
As we were waiting for the elevator, I took a few pictures out the window of our sixth floor. We saw how clear and blue the sky was so decided to go higher for some pictures. Went up to the 19th floor and got some nice photos since we had time.
There were more people than could fit in the hotel van so some folks took a cab but we all went to a shopping “mall” to look for more stuff. As we drove up to the front, I saw some guitars on display. “Dan, Dan, look!” He was a happy camper as a man came up and told him there was a booth inside with more instruments. While Dan sat and played their guitars, I wandered around the floor and looked at all the stuff that was for sale. Nothing even tempted me.
Once Dan finished at the music ‘store,’ we went to look for Larry and Nina at the pearl store on the fourth floor. Found them so sat and visited for awhile. Then we left looking for the KFC. We were successful in getting what we wanted at this store. Finding a place to sit was another matter. Finally, Dan asked a woman if we could sit with her. She spoke English and said ‘yes.’ We had a nice talk learning about her and she about us.
Back we went to the “mall” but on the way, we saw a woman who obviously needed help. Her arms and legs were like sticks. She was all hunched over. It looked like she couldn’t walk. Dan gave her a donation. We are hoping she got to keep it all and not give it over to a ‘caretaker.’
I went back to the pearl store while Dan went back to play guitar. I rested with Nina. Dan had an adventure. The woman at the music store said she kept her good instruments at another shop nearby. She led him into alleys that looked seedier and seedier. He was preparing to fight if necessary for his safety. Then she turned a corner…and there was the music store. Whew! He went in and played some other guitars. She had one that was handmade for $1,500. Dan said it was good quality and he enjoyed playing it.
We were able to catch one of our group tour buses for the return to the hotel.
bus drivers 'mojo':
We dawdled for awhile and then went back to the same place we’d had dinner two nights before. This time we had enough yuan to pay for it. The staff made sure we knew what the price would be before they took our order. Dan showed them we had enough yuan. Everyone was happy.
As we walked through the lobby to return to our room, we saw Larry and Lottie in the bar area. So we went over for a visit. Nina came down. KC showed up. Dave and Joanne showed up so we left to give them our seats.
Dan has been sore, sore, sore from yesterday’s Great Wall hike. I was a bit sore which really showed up when I used the Asian toilet today. It hurt to squat and to get back up. Anyway, when we got back to our room this evening, he soaked in the tub with HOT water for his muscles.
The pollution is coming back. The clarity is going away. The mountains are getting harder to see.
Its kinda weird to realize that we’ll be flying back to California tomorrow.
