Pole beans

Friday, April 05, 2013

I started digging up the strip beside the side fence where I planted beans and peas last year. They did well there having the chain link to crawl up. I was afraid there wouldn't be enough sun but since my neighbor took out his aspens and put in gravel it's much brighter. The fresh beans (at least what I got of them) tasted better than frozen or even grocery store beans. Unfortunately, the deer enjoyed the plants with my roses for an appetizer. I have tomato, basil, and beet sprouts up indoors. The beet sprouts are leggy because I didn't move them to a sunny spot soon enough after they'd sprouted so I've planted more beets. I'll put those out in pots on the screened in patio when the frost danger is past. The deer can't get into the patio! Maybe I should do some lettuce this year too and not so many flowering plants.

I overdid it the past few days and my legs were aching by the time I got out to work on the yard yesterday. I probably should take it easy today but I'd planned to take Sunday off and I'm going to stick to that and walk to Walmart today.

Great tip to keep animals away from your veggies: Take hair clipping and place it around your plants. The deer will think humans are around and will not come near.
