RIP Roger Ebert

Thursday, April 04, 2013

His witty, articulate reviews helped make me the movie junkie I am today. But it was his inspiring courage in the face of the cancer which eventually claimed him that I'll always remember.

Rest in peace, Roger. I know you and Gene Siskel are going toe to toe in Heaven right now and loving every minute of it.

I remember watching them in the 80s and 90s on PBS in Chicago, when I still lived there. I've always enjoyed reading Ebert's reviews, especially for the films he hated. He could condense the vitriol into just a few words, letting you know in no uncertain terms how much he thoroughly despised the dreck he had to sit through. He will be sorely missed among us cinefiles.

I watched Sneak Previews on PBS as well as Siskel and Ebert "At the Movies". I always trusted his reviews. they were intelligent as well as witty. He really understood the art of movie making.

luv the quote they reprinted on his review of GONE WITH THE WIND

A kiss is still a ...
"(Rhett Butler) tells Scarlett in a key early scene, 'You need kissing badly. That's what's wrong with you. You should be kissed, and often, and by someone who knows how.' For 'kissed,' substitute the word you're thinking of."

I believe Roger and Gene raised the level of movie reviews to an art form. Will miss the wit, the wise cracks... two thumbs up for the time we got to share with them.

I grew up watching "Siskel and Ebert" as a kid. Other movie reviewers have never been able to compare.
