Seriously...

Wednesday, April 03, 2013

Today may actually have been a new low for me in my teaching career, at least in terms of hating students. Today, we had to entertain our seniors while other grades were testing (this is one of the completely ridiculous ways in which we stop educating people to measure their education). Someone decided they should take a practice SAT. I already knew this was a bad idea, as I had to get them to register, and they quite rightly pointed out that they had already taken it, and been admitted to college, so aren't likely to ever retake it. However, the admin insisted, so I volunteered to help them out. What they failed to mention was that we weren't going to administer it-- instead, they brought in a guest from Pearson review (one of the big test prep companies). to do it. the students booed her down, and she left. As she was leaving the building, she saw me, and came over and asked me why I bother coming to work every day. Sadly, I had no answer for her.
And, as if that weren't enough, went to my radiation appointment, which had been moved back fifteen minutes, and waited another 45. they actually finally took me when I got dressed and said I had to leave, as it was already 6 o'clock, and I still had dinner, etc., to do. Anyway, got home very late to discover that my daughter was a bit freaked out because police helicopters had been circling, and a cruiser kept driving by.

Eek what a day. That testing thing sounds weird. Maybe I'm cynical, but I wonder if the administrators were just trying to help out the Pearson rep, trying to test out new questions, or maybe even get fees since you mentioned the registration process. I'm not sure I'd blame the seniors for booing, since noone explained how the process would benefit them in the least. All in all, I hope today's better. emoticon

It is so frustrating when you know you are doing something stupid, and no one will listen, and you are forced to do it anyway. I can only imagine how embarrased you must have been. So sorry you had such a bad day. I hope it gets better.

Sorry you had a bad time of it. I agree that a new admin could make a difference. But it's tough when the solution to a problem is out of your control. That just adds to the stress. And then your treatment on top of all that negativity...

Hope today is much better for you!

so sorry for your very rough day . this is not all on the students as they were forced to stupidly do something twice. I think you need some new administraters in your school . Were we they when they booed someone away who was trying to help them. wow my daughter is in the band and they recently raised 1000 for our food shelf . Band kinds are kind and caring and their director would never let them boo anybody. Maybe you should volunteer for the band next time.
