Bad Luck Jacket

Wednesday, April 03, 2013

I have a beautiful suit that my aunt bought for me when I was on the job market. I only wore it once: to my first interview. It was not a good interview, and I did not get the offer. I didn't wear it on my other two interviews (in which I did get offers). Today I wore the jacket to the suit, for a special event at the college.

As I walked into one seminar, a colleague remarked that I was wearing a suit jacket. I told him it was the first time I've worn a suit since I was on the market and that the interview I wore it on didn't go well, so I wonder if it's bad luck.

After the talk, I picked up my computer bag, and oops - I had forgotten to zip it and MY COLLEGE LAPTOP FELL OUT and hit the floor. And the plastic around the screen cracked and popped off, it got dented, etc... It still works. I took it to IT, and they popped stuff back into place... hopefully it will be fine after this.

Our super awesome IT person said, "Maybe you should get rid of that jacket!" But it's sooooo cute... maybe I should get a young priest and an old priest... ;)

*********
Here is a picture of me from today (wearing the bad luck jacket!):

To tell you the truth, I don't think I've lost weight, but I think I'm looking a lot better. Another colleague of mine at lunch today asked me how weight lifting is going (I run into her at the Y when she goes to swim in the mornings) and I told her it's going well. She asked to squeeze my arm so I made a muscle, and she said that other people tell her that she has big muscles, and mine are almost the same size as her's (she was an Olympic swimmer in her younger years, so I take that as a BIG compliment!).

And you know what... they are bigger. And so are my quads. I can feel them stick out when I flex them. I think tomorrow I'm going to weigh myself so I can measure my body fat and lean body mass again. And it's also April so it's time to take my measurements of my waist, hips, etc... I'll take pictures and measurements again at the end of Stage 1 of the weight training program. That will be at the conclusion of 6 weeks. Hopefully I'll see some changes.

I'm a little nervous though, because I have been eating a bit of non-veg and fruit carbs here and there (I had a roll at lunch today), and I've been eating some easter candy... and I just came back from the in-laws where the bread and sweets are plenty. I know I'm turning the energy into muscle, but it's still a little scary.

I like the jacket! Maybe it just needs a pep talk and some positive reinforcement.

I think I would be suspicious of the jacket as well. I might give it one or two more chances, but not on days where I would be in potential mortal peril ;) Maybe wear it at home on Saturday and see if you can break the bad luck streak emoticon

I do think the weight lifting is really going to change your shape and you are going to see results from that a lot faster than you do on the scale. Awesome compliment from the former Olympic swimmer! And I wouldn't stress too much about the carbs...as we saw from my minor freak-out on Monday, small indulgences do cause things to look scary at first, but as long as you stay the course and stay consistent, you'll see plenty of progress!

I'm not a superstitious person, but I probably wouldn't wear the jacket again just because of the negative events associated with it. Our subconscious remembers these things. If you put the jacket on and you expect something to go wrong that day, more likely it will.

BTW, I had a spur-of-the-moment ice cream cone yesterday. I've decided not to feel guilty about it.

I recommend you leave the jacket on a park bench somewhere....let karma decide where it goes!

Congrats on the NSV by your swim pal....just keep lifting away....another month or so and you'll be digging how prepared you are for summer!

Can't wait to hear your results. Don't give the scale too much power (I learned that from you :).

You look fabulous and more important...happy.

You can ignore the scale for longer if you are in doubt. Don't let it mess you up!!

Have a great day and keep ...
