After having lost 118lbs, I can tell you from experience that weight loss is NEVER and has NEVER been a consistent, linear experience.. linear meaning the line on the graph goes down at the same rate over the same amount of time..ie.. a consistent 1-3 lbs per week. It looks far more like the ups and downs of a stock market graph.

Like judging the quality of a stock, it isn't what it has done over a week or a month but what has it done over a significantly longer period of time.

One thing that people lack is patience. I have made unbelievable mistakes and even deliberate "mistakes" ie.. binges that would make an obsessive dieter cringe but yet have managed to lose alot of weight and accomplish some pretty epic things fitness wise. Long term success ALWAYS belongs to those who will stick to their guns and stay the course rather than fretting about week to week progress. Remember that this journey and lifestyle is for LIFE and it will take time for things to happen.

Far too many people pull the plug and quit not realizing the magic that was happening inside just because the scale didn't move, aborting what should have been their success story.

Stick to your guns at all costs even if the scale is not moving...

What will you do to be a success today?

LOVE your phrase, "the magic that was happening inside." Too often people give up and go back to their old habits, undoing all the good they had started. Today--almost 2 years into maintenance of a 175-lb. weight loss--I eat about the way I did when I was losing weight. I am vigilant and obsessive about keeping this weight off and plan to remain this way for the rest of my life. I'm in Zion, IL now at the Cancer Treatment Center of America with my husband. It was an alternative I pursued and one which I would not have looked into before my weight loss, because I hated flying ( asking for that seatbelt extender is humiliating and I really was mashed into those narrow seats), plus I couldn't walk any distance at all and sleeping in a hotel bed was painful. At home I spent 3/4 of every night sleeping in a recliner because the bed killed my back after a few hours. So not only am I physically strong enough to help my dear husband in this fight of and FOR his life--I fit into places much more easily now. At first, this weight loss was all about me, but now it's about him and since he is my whole world, it's really life-saving for both of us.

I have watched your progress while stalling on mine and it has always been about sticking to your guns hasn't it?

I let things/people get in my way of caring for myself and that was so silly!

Gosh this was good timing. I will not eat like a maniac when I get home. I will feed my body the fuel it needs.

I agree with the patience part. When I go on my months end plateaus, I now think of it as my body setting a new set point. My body getting use to that weight and by doing that it will be harder to get above that weight as your body wants to be the weight you've
been at the longest. I lost 45 pounds but it has taken me 3 years. That is o.k. because I didn't gain any back and continue to lose. In the past I would have given up but not now.

Awesome post! It seems I have patience in many other areas of my life EXCEPT weight loss! I will take it one day at a time, and know that if I feed my body healthy foods and exercise .. the scale will follow :)

That's great. Timely. I'm a little frustrated the scale is moving up again. Normally I'd think, "that's life", it will go back down. After all, the clothes are fitting better. However, being in a team challenge it is annoying.

Yep, stock market chart. That's a good analogy!

    Dear On2Victory,

Awesome thoughts! I especially like "Far too many people pull the plug and quit not realizing the magic that was happening inside just because the scale didn't move . . ."

The scale moves VERY slowly for me!! And that is frustrating! But I'm going to use your phrase for (at least) the rest of this week, because good things are happening no matter what!

Thank you for these awesome ideas! You seriously helped me! In the meantime, "ten mucho cuidado" means "take good care"!! All the best!
sincerely,
Riisa emoticon

I like the stock market comparison. It took me a long time to get that sometimes you have to stall to pick it back up again. I am about 5 lbs away from my 100 lb loss and it's been a challenging ride. The key, I find, is to keep looking for those challenges that keep you motivated! Great post, thank you.
