Great Vacation Hike (Redwoods, Coast!)

Monday, April 01, 2013

Vacation was wonderful. I drove to Brookings Oregon, which is about a 7 hour drive. I stopped a Jedediah Smith park to look at the redwoods along the way. Packed my lunch and breakfast for the first few days, which was a good way to at least start the vacation with healthy habits. My hotel in Brookings was right on the ocean with a lovely view.

I met my hiking buddy John and his new woman friend, who was charming. I am always thrilled when my friends find love, particularly late in life! John served me a great dinner (fresh steelhead fish and veggies). After dinner, we visited Harris Beach state park to admire the sunset.

The next day we did several hikes in Boardman state park. I loved the varied terrain – through redwoods, through rain forest type foliage, and with constant views of the coast. We hiked around 7 – 8 miles with lots of elevation changes, so it was a good workout.

I drove from the Oregon coast to California (San Francisco bay area) on US 101. It was really nice to go down a different route – I have not driven that way in over 20 years. The road starts along the coast, then it winds through the Redwoods and foothills. It’s lovely. I stopped at Prairie Creek Redwood part and hiked a short trail through the Redwoods.

This magnificent herd of Roosevelt elk didn't read the signs! They didn't stay in the wildlife viewing areas. Adults can weigh up to 1200 pounds.

Then I stopped at in Eureka (California) to admire the Victorian mansions.

Thanks for posting the lovely pix!

I've been there! All of hwy 101 is a gorgeous drive. I especially love the lower half of the state, near Cape Blanco and about the middle of the state, near Heceta lighthouses. Walking on the beach is EXCELLENT exercise, too, although you must wear big sunglasses or you'll get sand in your eyes.

I haven't been to Northern California since I moved back to Oregon. Got to go!

A few more great places I haven't been in a long time - Rogue River valley, Lemolo falls, Crater Lake. Toketee Falls is no longer the place to go anymore. Perhaps drawn by the word TOKE, drug-users now show up there in droves. It is an unpleasant experience to suddenly happen among a bunch of naked, swearing, stoned men with few teeth.

Have you ever stayed in the State Park cabins and yurts? I highly recommend them. You have to reserve pretty far in advance, but they are very nice.

Thank you for the pictures and blog about the first part of your vacation trip, especially as it's all new territory for me. I've never been in Oregon (or Washington state for that matter), and have only been as far north in California as San Francisco, then through Sacramento and the Donner Pass to Reno before going south again.

The Victorian mansions are incredible! Isn't it wonderful that someone was smart enough to maintain them. So often these beautiful buildings are demolished and replaced with "modern" (read ugly in many cases) structures.

Glad you were able to have a good visit and hike with your friend John, and that you got along well with his new lady friend. My brother-in-law, Ken, whose wife died 3 years ago has just moved in with a woman he met curling last winter... he's 78 and starting a new life! Life and love constantly amaze me!

Looking forward to the next part of your vacation blog.
