If at first you don't succeed....

I might as well come clean straight away, this is a naughty blog because it's a baking blog... But for me, a life without baking is not a life worth living!

It is Easter!! emoticon

Happy Easter everybody! emoticon emoticon emoticon

It's the school holidays at the moment and I am off work too emoticon

As well as trying to eat my own weight in chocolate (not really! I've been surprisingly restrained this year... kinda!), I've finally done something I've wanted to do for years: baking Hot Cross Buns!!

I'm not sure if everybody is familiar with what they are, so here is some information on them:

I didn't know Hot Cross Buns until I came to England, but I love them. Every year, at Easter, I mean to bake my own but always end up getting them at the shops.
But not this year!! Nuh uh!

So I got a few recipes off the Internet, bought all my ingredients and created a great big mess in my kitchen (I'm such a messy cook!)

My first attempt wasn't all that great emoticon The buns were shaped funny, they were a little dry and the crosses on top of the buns hadn't really worked and broke during baking and completely came off when I tried to glaze them. Still, they tasted very nice but I wasn't satisfied:

But I'm not one to be deterred (nor one to pass an opportunity to spend more time in my kitchen, baking!), so tonight, I grabbed another recipe, more ingredients and made an even bigger mess in my kitchen (I mean, you cannot underestimate how messy I am!)

And by gum, I think I got it! I've finally cracked it! This is Hot Cross Buns, Take 2, and I'm so proud of how they turned out. And they're not just pretty, they taste good too emoticon

Have a lovely day Sparkfriends! emoticon

Wow they look AMAZING! I'm from London so I know alllll about these little bundles of delight. Even the cheapo, shop-bought ones taste so good! Toasted with a bit of butter on them...ahhhh! Heaven!

As I was reading your blog and came to the first picture, I thought they didn't look bad. As I continued reading and saw your 2nd picture, there is a difference. Your 2nd batch looks great. Glad both batches tasted okay.

I love baking as well.

I love the finished project! They look delicious, and I'm very interested because I had just heard an interview with a fancy British chef talking about his recipe. Unfortunately I didn't catch his name so I can't give you the reference, but it looks like you have it under control without his advice!

p.s. Love the idea of eating my weight in chocolate too!
