Day 52 - My Running Gear

Monday, April 01, 2013

Someone sent me a Sparkmail asking me about my running gear... so I thought I'd make a quick blog about it.

Shoes - Asics Gel-Blur33 2.0. (I have several other pairs, this is my favorite. I have a neutral gait, but I hate having too much arch or heel support in shoes. I love the freedom of the minimalist-type shoes, but I can't do Five Fingers or Free Runs because I do need /some/ padding on my feetsies for this 350+ lb body. These are a great compromise between support and range of motion!).
.
.
.

Hue Women's Air Sport socks - No show, Black. These are the Best. Socks. Ever. Super cushy, mold to your feet, no blisters, no rubbing, moisture-wicking and badass-looking. Seriously love these socks.
.
.
.

Compression pants. These are my absolute favorite. They "suck it all in," slimming me and adding a little bit of compression to my shins which help prevent shin splints. Also, if your thighs rub together when running, these will eliminate chaffing. Available at Old Navy up to a size 30.
.
.
.

Compression tank (padded). I use this instead of a bra, since I am not a very "busty" girl. It has a built-in shelf bra (similar to a bathing suit), which keeps everything in place, and it sucks my back and tummy into a more attractive shape. Available at Old Navy up to a size 30.
.
.
.

Neoprene belt/waist trimmer. I put this on my belly, under my tank, with some Sweet Sweat (a product that makes you sweat more). It helps get water weight out my belly (the biggest part of me) by increasing the temperature and getting blood flowing to it, making it sweat way, WAY more than it otherwise would. I feel like it also helps my running posture (a bit more back support).
.
.
.

Shirt. Just a super-light-weight tee from JC Penney.
.
.
.

Hoodie or Track Jacket. I get them at Old Navy and Lane Bryant.. there are tons out there, nothing special.
.
.
.

Neoprene water bottle sling. It holds a 32 oz Nalgene and keeps it cool. Being a very plus-sized runner, I need to sip (read: gulp) water during my walking intervals to help cool down, or else my running performance suffers. This is so much less awkward than carrying a bottle, and cooler-looking than a camelbak.
.
.
.

Garmin. The most important piece! This piece of equipment has a GPS and comes with access to an online analysis tool which allows me to see my pace during laps, route on google maps with elevation, weather, etc, along with a bunch of other data. I can pre-plan intervals, and it will buzz to tell me when to start/slow down. It has a heart rate monitor, too, which helps me know which heart rate zone I am in, an how many calories I burned during my workout (and it is much more accurate than any other HRM I've used).

Update:
"Do you use an ipod or iphone?" yeah, I have an iphone.
"Do you have special ear buds that don't fall out?"
I use these:
iLuv IEP334GRNN Neon Sound High-Performance Earphones
"Do you wear a sun visor?" I don't need one in the shady park where I run.. but I may get one eventually.
"What about apps?" Currently using this 5K runner app heavydutyapps.com

Fancy duds! Thanks for posting all of the gear that you use. I actually ordered a pair of compression pants from Old Navy last week - never thought to look there for plus sized stuff, but a co-worker recommended them.
