Another milestone

Monday, April 01, 2013

Today is a milestone for me . . . it was one year ago that I officially retired (forced into an early retirement). I wondered (worried?) what I'd do to keep busy, since I'd worked all my life; never had the opportunity to be a 'housewife'.

It has been a good year; lots of healing and personal growth.

Last October I committed to regaining my health and SparkPeople has been such an enormous part of that, in so many ways. In addition to giving me tools to assist in shedding 18 pounds (which have stayed off!), I've tried to take advantage of SparkPeople's abundance of other resources as well.

My SparkFriends are probably the greatest blessings of it all. You're always there with a dash of humor, or a good swift kick in the backside, whenever needed and appropriate. You guys absolutely ROCK!!!

This morning I sat on the back porch and looked out over the yard, watching the hummingbirds darting all around, the blue jays gathering nesting materials, and listening to the soft rain and the frogs 'hollerin'. Rather than the turmoil, noise and clutter that filled my head one year ago, there was peace and stillness. For this and so much more, all I can think to say is "Thanks Dad"!

I could retire with a full pension, but we can't afford the pay cut. I would still have to work and right now with the union I would hate to lose my seniority and benefits.

We are trying to pay down bills and watch our spending so we can retire. Unfortunately, our shooting is not a cheap sport, and I would not like to give it up totally. We have cut back on going to out of state tournaments and competing as often as we did before.

You make me feel better about my possible retirement. I have enough time in to retire, but have no idea what I'd do without the structure of going to work. Thanks for sharing!

Sometimes the thing we fear the most brings the most pleasure. For you, early retirement may have seemed like the end but proved to be the beginning of a whole new life that just now has become a reality AND a
success story. Do enjoy! HUGS!

Right now, I would consider being forced into early retirement a HUGE blessing. We have ALL new administrators next year. It is a lot of change, and I'm afraid none of it will be for the better.

I retired in the last couple of years, a little before I planned but later than my husband wanted. I was also worried that I wouldn't know what to do with myself, but it turns out that usually I'm wishing there were more hours in a day. It's quite a feeling of freedom to do what I want when I want, rather than having to go to work. Glad you are enjoying it. Your backyard sounds so inviting. emoticon
