3 months down, time for a recap of the month and the year to date.
First, on the grad school front, I am in the home stretch. I turned in my dissertation to my committee 2 weeks ago and have the defense this Thursday. The defense is a presentation to my committee (4 professors) and is open to spectators. It is a bit of a formality, a chance to present the culmination of 3 years of research. After the open session, the committee excuses everyone, asks a few more questions then gives me the thumbs up or down. After the thumbs up, I have about 10 days to make any additional changes and get everything turned in and filed. If all goes according to plan, I will graduate on 10 May.
Exercise and fitness are going well. The weather is getting nicer which means more outdoor runs and means more runs with the kids on the weekend. Like yesterday I was able to run on the bike trail for 6 miles with Henry and Elizabeth in the jogger and Paul riding along on his 2 wheeler. He was a champ, though he was getting tired and we had to stop for a special k bar half way through (he was tired b/c he rode 5 miles the day before while I roller bladed and pushed the littles in the jogger). No races this month, eyeing a 5k in April and a 10k in May, though I have not signed up for either. I had a good virtual 10k earlier in the month, running a 47:52 on a fairly hilly course, for 7:42 average pace. I think my PR for a 10k distance is 45:11 back in 2001. I think with some speed work and favorable conditions, I could take a shot at that later in the season.
I ran for 113.2 miles and swam for 10 over the month, bringing the 2013 totals to 309.9 miles and 35 miles respectively. I am on a good pace to exceed my 1,000 mile goal for the year!
The most visible category here on SP is weight. I was up a bit this month, 183 this morning after being at 179 on 1 Mar, 180 on 1 Feb and 181 on 1 Jan. While I have been putting in a lot of exercise, I have been missing my calorie target range too frequently. I am not concerned yet but will keep an eye on it and refocus on eating within my range if I need to. I have maintained a 20 lb loss for about 6 months now (with a few small hicups). I would like to drop another 10 lbs, but am not in a hurry to do so. I think during the summer I will be able to refocus on the weight loss portion of the health picture.
After I move, I will have better access to health care too. I had my cholesterol and blood sugar done back in 2008 or so. I was within a healthy range then, I would like to get reevaluated and make sure that I am still on track.
Two additional reasons my weight jumped a little this week and month were sleep and Easter. Our kids have been on and off sick for the past 2-3 weeks. Henry, who turns 1 on Wednesday, has been miserable with ear infections, nose junk and eye goo. His antibiotics have caused him to have really loose poo which has led to some epic blowouts. He threw up this morning at 4 am, and would not settle back down afterwards so I stayed up with him. Later, while eating breakfast in his high chair, he threw up and had a massive PJ filling blowout. The poor guy! He was miserable! (So were his mommy and daddy...) Anyway, lots of missed sleep for mommy and me don't really help the diet effort!
Easter was nice, we had a nice service at our church with a brunch between a singing service and the main service. I made bread pudding (one of my DW's favorites and a request) and a pineapple upside down cake (which I had not made before but had a random hankering for). Both turned out well. I waited to get in line for the brunch, which helped limit my selection (and intake). After church we came home and had an Easter egg hunt in our back yard, which was fun. Then capped the afternoon off with a run on the biking trail that I mentioned earlier.
Here is a picture of the kids before heading to church yesterday:

That's it for now. Thanks for all the support from my fellow Sparklers! Best wishes for the new month as you continue to strive to meet and exceed your goals!
