Signs of spring here in Madison, Wisconsin

Sunday, March 31, 2013

I have to begin by saying I don't hate winter. In fact, I prefer winter to summer, so I have not been desperately waiting for spring. That doesn't mean I don't love the change of seasons, and all the signs we have, if we are paying attention, that the seasons are doing their thing.
So - last week and this, on what I optimistically call a run, I heard and saw sandhill cranes. That was my first sign.
Again last week, I purposely walked by a certain yard - and there they were - snowdrops blooming.
This week the red bikes are back. Madison, like the Twin CIties and maybe others, has bike kiosks where you can rent a bright red bike with a white front basket and see Madison the best way.
Sign #4 - we live across the street from a Dominican Priory, and yesterday Brother ?? (I don't know his name) was tooling around the neighborhood on his motorized scooter, radio blasting, smiling and nodding to all he passed.
I am ready for sign number 5 - my rhubarb poking those bright red heads up out of the mud...but at this point I would have to chop the ice around them first.
I can wait.

I too like the changes in the season but don't get much of it anymore since moving to CA in 2009. I don't care for the cold here but would be fine somewhere in the midwest with the snow.

Your sandhills are earlier than mine! I've been out looking for them but no sign yet here on the Rocky Mountain front. But my crocuses areat least through the ground.

Glad to hear there are signs of spring in Madison. I'm up in the Northwoods 225 miles north of you. Make it move north FASTER, please!!! It snowed both yesterday and today here.... yikes!

GreasyJoan, I made my location sound much more pastoral than it is! I'm on a fairly busy street, as is the priory, and it only houses about 6-8 brothers and priests. I am within a mile of a lake, creek, and arboretum, so that's where I see and hear cranes and great blue heron.

Very lovely signs of spring indeed! Madison must be a wonderful place to live and it must be a bit soothing and quiet and contemplative to live so close to a Priory. I was amused to think of that endearing brother with his radio. I guess he did not give up music for Lent!

Go, rhubarb! I hope the climate is ready for you soon.

I used to love winter the most of all seasons , well , maybe second after fall. but lately , like the past 15 years , we have 9 months of cold and 3 months of hot weather. no more 4 seasons , more like two and one is way too long. so I'm kind of wishing for spring right now. emoticon

I love the signs of spring, but I am definitely an any season but winter person. :) I'm super excited to have reached outdoor running season again and am looking forward to hiking and swimming too. I've noticed a lot of critters around the neighborhood, mostly rabbits and squirrels, not to mention returning robins and geese. I wish we had rhubarb, but at least it's almost farmer's market time again too!

funny that I went out today and lifted the bucket I have over the rhubarb to protect it from the frost and I have five small thin sticks already!!! Have a great easter.
