Today was a good day to get back on the bike!

Sunday, March 31, 2013

It's been over three weeks since I have been able to go for an outdoor ride.

It's been more than 6 months since I've been serious about maintaining a good exercise routine and a healthy eating routine.

It's hardly any surprise that the results would be that I gained back most of the weight that I lost last year.

That's the bad news. The good news? In the past six month I have finished a dissertation, obtained a Ph.D. in Information Technology, completed a intensive CISSP training session, and obtained my Certified Information System Security Professional (CISSP) certification - the last (and in my field, one of the most important) certification that I wanted to complete.

So enough education and training for a while. It was great that I have been so focused on these goals, but unfortunately, I have lost focus on maintaining a healthy life-style.

No more.

Today was the first day toward a new beginning. While I was still a little bit jet-lagged from my trip to the US, the weather was nice and I just HAD to get out for a short ride. Not having ridden for a while I was going to take it easy and only go out about 10 KM or so.

The 5 km (3 mile) point came and went, and I was really feeling pretty good about the ride. I had to ride at a very recreational pace, as today was Sunday, and there were soooo many cyclist on the trails. Nevertheless, I finished a 20 KM (12 mile) ride in about 55 minutes. It was certainly not the fastest ride I have ever been on, but it was pretty satisfying.

Today marks the start of a new beginning. I am going to get back to some serious cycling, and get back to doing everything else I know how to do to live a healthy life-style. This will be like taking my life back - part three.

    Congratulations DOCTOR DAVE!
Are you back in the states for an extended time, or still based in Korea? If so, be safe.

First, congratulations on all of yur educational achievements!!!! What you have done in that area is outstanding.
Second, I can relate to the weight gain and working on a new start. Since my knee replacement and hand surgeries, I have gained back some of the weight I lost early on. I am in the process of re-establishing the things that worked for me to get to my lowest weight and best condition that I had reached before the surgeries.
Currently the date and training schedule is set for my first century ride and my new Trek Domane road bike in on order at the bike shop.
Third, I am happy to hear that you are able to get outdoors for a ride. It will be a while yet before I am able to do that. I need to wait for the snow to be off the streets and bike paths. At least the weather has warmed so that it is gradually melting away.
I wish the best for us both as we get back in the saddle.
