Perspective Gained.

Saturday, March 30, 2013

I'm departing from my usual Tales from 100# Down series today to share some perspective. We shared dinner last night with our only child. He turned 29. He was born premature years ago with many complications but survived and grew and became the wonderful son he is today.

Last night he shared with us that he is to have surgery. Because of some of the complications from his prematurity this surgery leaves him with many unknowns. Suffice it to say this mother's heart is burdened today and reminded about how precious life is.

There are many health issues of which we have no control (like my son's) but there are also MANY that we do. Obesity can bring many health problems but we have the ability to make better food choices and exercise our bodies to change that. I am living proof of that with a VERY good cholesterol of 124, low blood pressure and normal blood chemistry since losing 105 pounds, eating healthier and exercising. Why wouldn't you want better health? Isn't better health more important than downing another super sized fast meal from the local drive-thru, bingeing on easter candy or plowing through half a bag of chips?

Take control of your health where you can. Make every day count.

There is nothing more difficult to bear than a child's illness (no matter how old that child is). I pray that all will go well for him.

Your post is so true! How blessed we are to have the ability to make positive changes and turn things around in our lives by making good choices in food and activities every day. I feel for you with your son, and although I was blessed with a healthy daughter I never take that for granted. You and your family are in my prayers and I am convinced he will be fine; after all he has one AWESOME MOM who inspires everyone on spark people. Hang in there my friend we are all pulling for you! emoticon

I'm Nana to a now 12 yEar-old preemie, so I hear your heart! Jakob also had several complications and "died" once when he was 3 weeks old. And he's blind in one eye and legally blind in the other. I pray nothing develops later, but we know it could. Hugs to you, and many prayers for a positive outcome. Keep us posted on when the surgery occurs and how he's doing!

You are right, good health is PRECIOUS beyond words. Just ask someone who was unlucky enough to be born without it.

It is a shame so many people seem to be throwing their health away with both hands, as you say, over something stupid and mindless, like fast food and junk food.

You've given me a lot to think about this morning about what's really important, and how it is MY CHOICE to do what I need to do to honor my good health and the body that has served me so well for 58 years.
