Trying On Clothes at KMart

Today is day 39 of my current streak!

Last week I wrote a blog about going shopping for a cardigan sweater. You'd think that buying a simple sweater would be easy...but it wasn't! I got a little overwhelmed with the experience. So many different colors, sizes and styles! I had wanted to get a cardigan in a pretty Spring color, but I ended up going right to my old comfort zone and getting a black one! Oh well, black is basic, and will go with anything, so it was a good purchase.

Yesterday while out for a walk with my son, I bumped into a neighbor. She is an older woman, 85 years old. I've known her for almost 20 years now. Anyway, she mentioned that she was getting ready to go to Kmart, and asked if I'd like to go with her. So I went home to get my purse and to change my clothes, and then off we went. I didn't need to buy anything, so I just went along for the ride.

Once we got to Kmart, she headed off for the housewares department. I decided to look at the clothes. Even though I didn't have any money, I wanted to look at cardigan sweaters again. While I was looking at the sweaters, I also checked out some other clothes. I found a couple of really cute blouses and some pants, in both misses and plus. Since my friend is famous for being a super slow shopper, I knew I had plenty of time to I decided to try some clothes on!

I think the fact that I wasn't actually planning to purchase anything really took the pressure off, and made the experience kind of fun! I thought of Stacy and Clinton from my fave show, What Not To Wear, and started trying to put together some outfits.

Some of those outfits I put together were pretty awful, but some of them were actually nice! Some of the clothes were too big, and some were too small...but instead of thinking badly about myself for the clothes that didn't fit, I just brushed it off and tried a different size. I even found one shirt on the clearance rack for just 99 cents that was nice. It was sort of a wrap style shirt with a V neck (not too low) and a colorful print. It looked kind of small, though. It was in the Misses section and was a size XL. It was so unlike the kind of tops I normally buy. Usually I go for something loose and shapeless! This was definitely not loose and shapeless! In addition to the wrap styling of it, it also had a little peplum and a side zipper. I didn't think it would fit me, but I decided to try it on anyway...and it fit! A LITTLE snug, but nothing that losing 5 pounds or so wouldn't take care of. I tried on a little shrug style cardigan over it, and it looked good on me! So I decided to buy the shirt, since it was so cheap.

I tried on lots of clothes, including styles that I would never have tried on before, and I found out a little bit of what works for me and what doesn't. There were more "rejects" than successes, but you know what? I think even thin women go through that when they shop for clothes. Not everything is going to look or fit perfectly. You just have to keep trying things on.

Anyway, my friend finally finished her shopping, and we headed to the checkout lanes. I had to borrow from her in order to buy that 99 cent shirt, since I didn't have any money on me, lol.

She is planning to go to Good Will next week or the week after, and I'm going with her. I think that would be a good place for me to buy a few clothes for now, while I'm still working towards getting to my goal size.

Glad you had a good experience with clothes. Goodwill is a great place for transition clothes.

It really does take the pressure off when trying on clothes without buying, it is more fun than having to make a decision.

Hope you had a wonderful Easter. emoticon

Good will is an AWESOME place to get nice clothes at really cheap prices! If you go to the right ones, you can even get some designer stuff. And when yard sales start go on Mondays.

I love consignment shopping, too. I've gotten Coldwater Creek, Chico's, Hilfiger, Ralph Lauren dirt cheap!

Also, try at the end of a season for even more markdowns. Spring clothes can be worn during summer, too.

Another wonderfully written blog by you! Thanks so much. And I have to admire your 85 yr old neighbor for her shopping energy and spunk. Wish you can tell us how she does it, now that you have intrigued us elderly Spark peeps! I might have the courage to go out to a mall now. I have been shopping online or by mail order most of my adult life because I cannot stand to try on clothes and stand in front of a mirror. Only thing worse than that is standing in a mirrored aerobic studio and seeing myself lol.

Reading Psalm 139 daily, morning and night, at a point when I was very down on myself, made me realize that I was valued in the eyes of God, who foreknew everything about me before He created me and loved me anyway!

I used to be really skinny, too skinny, in fact, and shopping for clothes was no less of an ordeal then than now. There is always something, no matter what size you are. Take the advice of Stacy and Clinton - you have to try it on, and if it doesn't work, it's the clothing, not you! emoticon

    woo woo. Good for you!

Nothing says frumpy like clothes that are too big, too loose and too baggy. I'm glad you had the chance to try on lots of stuff without any pressure. It's always good to shop without buying. The only way you can tell what looks good on you is to try it on and
Goodwill is a great place to purchase those tween clothes. emoticon

Really emoticon that last frame. It breaks my heart to see people hold onto those negative thoughts about themselves. That stuff just needs to be thrown away, as depicted. I used to be negative that way & I'm so glad I see myself, even with all my flaws, in a positive light. It's an amazing lesson to learn & one that has taken me far. emoticon emoticon

Pixie, love how you experimented with looks and thoughts while shopping! My mother raised me shopping almost once a week. But most of the time we didn't buy! Really. It was all about getting a "sense of things" in the fashion line. Then when we saw a bargain, we knew to move, as you did with the 99 cent blouse.

And you are right that everyone trying on clothes has to deal with sizing being crazy. Recently tried on pants and the smallest size was way too big and the biggest, way too tight. I don't know what's going on in quality control!!!

Thanks for the blog. And love the last photo/cartoon.

You got a shirt that looks great for 99 cents? I call that a shopping coup! So glad you got a chance to try on clothes just "for fun". Super skinny girls aren't the only ones who get to shop for recreation. Also loved the last cartoon. My favorite bit? That she was standing on a box that said "too short" to throw all the others away! You go, girl!

I would consider this a NSV. you went shopping, found something that you would not have considered before. You were not really concerned about the size. And you bought it! Therefore: NSV! emoticon emoticon

I often just try on -- to get a sense of what works and what doesn't. And no matter what size I've been, (from 20 to 6) there are colours and styles that don't cut it, and then (as you found with that cute shirt) styles that look good even if you didn't expect it! I'm a huge fan of thrift stores, also ebay and etsy -- there is so much clothing that is just going to the landfill, often "new without tags" (NWOT) or "vintage" which may be much better quality/material than I'm prepared to buy for new!!

  Hi Pixie,
I'm so proud of your shopping progress! I am a fan of "What Not to Wear" also. Last week I felt bad for you because you struggled so much. Now I can tell you are going to be fine. I love shopping at Ross. You can find good deals, there is no pressure & there's a bit of a treasure hunt aura. It 's good to keep practicing your skills. Your body changes along the way & visiting the stores often keeps you abreast of the trends. Plus, I think there must be a fashionista inside you! Why else are you faithfully watching how to transform yourself? Happy hunting! emoticon

Sounds like you have a successful afternoon. I buy my clothes at Goodwill and a shop that benefits domestic abuse victims. I hadn't thought about taking clothes back after they are too big. Right now my sisters are benefiting from my weight loss. emoticon

The idea of cutting some pants into shorts is a good idea. I have jeans that I bought this year that still fit but hopefully won't come fall and winter. I could cut them into capris and shorts and save money. Thanks for the hint.
