Follow up on Sarge

Friday, March 29, 2013

Sarge's hips are showing signs of Arthritis (which I figured). He is favoring the right side more then the left. Plus his spine was somewhat tender when they examined him. Yesterday we didn't have the money for blood work so they are starting him off with Tramadol. He will follow up with another Vet appt. next week. If the Tramadol isn't effective enough, then they will do blood work and start Sarge on Rimadyl. If Sarge is still struggling then Xrays will be next. I like the fact they are so willing to work with us. Since we were a new client, the Vet visit was only $10.00 (that's a plus) I really like the Office Manager, and she adored Sarge. Sarge was so calm at the office. Normally he is so nervous, but he didn't shake at all while we were there.
This morning Sarge looked better. I let Sarge outside early this am, to do his business, then we went back to bed for a while. Sarge walked into the room before me, and jumped up on the bed before I could do anything. The rest of the day he was in pain. I knew he bit off more then he could chew. I'm going to have my Hubby lower the bed so Sarge can lay by me when he wants, and won't have to jump up to get to the bed. Yes, my dogs are spoiled, but I wouldn't have it any other way lol. I will let you know how Sarge is doing in a couple more days. Hopefully we can keep him calm so the meds can keep his pain down. Thanks for your concerns. I gave Sarge a hug for you. He sends you kisses!!

My friend has little stair sets she got at costco or walmart for her pooch to get on the bed and couch. They are carpeted and light weight. Might be something that would work? Hope sarge feels better soon. Arthritis is no fun, for humans or our fur covered friends!

Tramadol is great stuff. Be careful he doesn't overdo just because he feels better. Limit jumping down; that's more impact than jumping up. I have a houseful of seniors. What can I say? My bed is on the floor. I have a 4 poster cherry bed that's been in the family for generations. It has been stored for 20+ years while I pamper Basset backs. emoticon There are ramps up to both sofas. The things we do, but they're worth it!

    We'll keep praying! emoticon

$10 for initial visit, that is great. I hope the medicine works so you don't have to have more tests done. Have you tried CareCredit? I have the card just for my dogs. You have to check to see if the vet takes it. they give you 0% interest for 6 mos to a year, then if there is a bal, they do charge interest. I have a bal on mine, I was hoping to pay it off by August. Not so sure now with no job at the moment.

The Vet sounds amazing, and so nice that they will work with you.
It can be very expensive, I know, we have a cat with problems an on meds.

Poor guy! Might have to build a buddy-ramp for the side of the bed so he can just walk up!! I can tell you that the Tramadol is what I use for my fibromyalgia and arthritis,,I can only take a half pill at a time and it puts me to sleep for a couple hours,,a whole pill puts me out for a whole day and two is three days asleep. Sarge feels good with the pill!

What a great vet too! ours was like that.

Did the vet recommend any kind of glucosamine treatment for Sarge? That might help with the pain - I use it with Farley and it makes a world of difference.

He is such a calm dog and well behaved. Prayers still coming to him, and the vet to find a simple solution to his problem. We want him to his old happy self!!! emoticon emoticon

Poor baby! I'm sure it will make him feel better to still be able to cuddle with you. Lowering the bed is an excellent idea!

So glad to hear that you like the vet. That is so important. I had a pup on Rimadyl years ago and it helped a lot. I'm not familiar with that other drug. Hope it helps Sarge. Please give him hugs and kisses from Punky and I.

Sure hope Sarge finds some relief from the pain.

We just spent $239.88 on a once a year Well Dog check-up for our 3 1/2 yr.old Granddog, Finch. And then $150 for 12 months of Heartworm Preventative, and 6 mos. Flea and Tick Protection. It is scary the cost of these Vet bills and medicine! emoticon

We can't afford to have a dog at this rate. But our Daughter, who is really the owner of Finch, will pick up most of the cost.

How nice of you to lower your bed. I love my dogs too, I know plenty of people who would never do that for a dog. I know Sarge is getting loving care. emoticon

Oh, I am so happy about the vet visit. I used to be a pharmacy technician and Tramadol is a safe pain medicine that also acts like an antidepressant for humans. It is used for chronic pain and I hope it works for him. It will take a few days for the results to show. When I took my cat, Baby, to the vet last October when he was really sick, my vet was a new vet too and very nice. Isn't it great when it works that way. Many emoticon to you and Sarge. Love, Chelsea emoticon

I, too, have 'elderly' dogs with arthritis issues...two with severe arthritis. They both take Rimadyl (generic...it's less expensive), and Dasuquin with MSM chews (pricey, but I buy it online for less). They are doing really well. As for the bed, we put a bench at the foot of our bed that is half the height of the bed itself and about 16 inches wide. It's got carpet wrapped and stapled on top for traction. They use that bench to get on the bed. I would not hesitate to put my mattress on the floor, if necessary, so my babies could sleep with me in comfort. My husband, no way. LOL He once built a plywood ramp along the side of our bed that went the whole length of the side so it wouldn't be too steep....just so our old Chow/Lab mix, Roxie, could come to bed. That thing weighed a ton and took up half the walk space between the bed and the dresser! We got several years of use out of it for her and the next oldest dog. I hope Sarge can get relief...your Vet sounds lovely. Good luck.

Sounds like your vet is wonderful...so glad you found them. You are a wonderful mom to Sarge! What a sweet dog he is.

The meds should help. Poor bably... they make "steps" to help them get up on beds, too. Of course they should get to lay with their people on the most comfortable surfaces!

I was just thinking about Sarge and wondering how is vet visit went! We just got back an hour ago from a night out, dinner, movie and shopping at Walmart. We love our late nights! Really tired now. Just posting my minutes, food and then I saw your blog post on the friend feed and popped on over!
Poor Sarge, we know how he feels with that darn arthritis! This cold here has got my body feeling like lead! I need to move to Hawaii where the temps are steady at 75 for the most part, depending on what part of the islands you live! You all can move with us too!! emoticon emoticon

So very glad you have such a lovely vet,as that is so important .
Perhaps they will treat Sarge and let you make regular payments to pay the bill off.
It wouldn't hurt to ask, and Sarge could be treated sooner rather than later.
Thinking of you all . Bobby sends doggie kisses to Sarge. And I send my love to you all.
Here is a nice tasty steak for Sarge
