Getting together with an old friend

Thursday, March 28, 2013

You know how it is.........

You hear from an old friend, someone you haven't seen in so long that you can't remember when. decide to get together.

The get together is something you anticipate with a lot of excitement and yes some anxiety. Will you still click? Will your old friend recognize you? Will you see the same thing in your friend that you used to love so much?

The date arrives. You fuss over what to wear. Comfort is important but you also want to make a good impression, show you care and your spirit.

Today was that day for me. I was getting together with a very good old friend. A friend I hadn't seen in months.

The occasion for our get together was a sunny day with temps in the 40's and dry roads just begging for a date.

Who was my old friend?

Me.....the road runner me. The me who has been spending the winter, this long, long winter, trying to stay fit, building strength and flexibility while hopefully getting completely over the PF and tight IT band issues I had last fall.

When the thermometer registered 40, 41, 43, 45, I determined the long awaited day had finally arrived. I dug through my running gear and chose what I thought would be just the right layers. I gathered the necessary accessories, my garmin, cellphone, pepper spray etc.

The sun was bright, the temp while warmer than it has been since forever, was cool....cold. I took off for my warm up walk and then about the time to kick it into gear, I discovered I had forgotten to press start on the garmin...Oops! No problem it was only the warm up.

One thing about running is you don't really ever forget how to run. You may forget how to pace yourself. You may forget how to breathe....LOL, but you don't forget how to run.

I chose one of my favorite routes, a fairly quiet route with very little traffic or dogs, hills that aren't too daunting and pretty as it is quite wooded. In reality, the same things that make this a great route are also the things that can be troublesome in the spring. The road was not nearly as clear as the roads we've been walking on the last few days. I was able to weave around the patches of black ice and when I discovered that the little leg I usually like to add to the run was all ice, I cut that from the agenda.

My clothing choices soon showed themselves to be wrong. I am one of those runners who heats up fairly quickly. It wasn't too intolerable, but I started to unzip at about 1/2 a mile, took off my gloves at a mile and became aware that my legs were getting damp from perspiration. When I arrived home I had to peel the damp layers of wind pants and leggings off....yuck.

My visit with my old friend, road runner me, was a resounding success. We still knew each other. there were things that have changed but not enough to be a problem. We have already set the date for another get together. Next time, I'll remember to start the garmin and set my alerts. And I'll be dressed better for the weather.....maybe!

Have you gotten together with an old friend lately?

Glad you had a good run, Donna! Really! Disrobing in public emoticon (They called her the streak!) I'm so glad it was a good reunion, and you'll get the hang of what to wear, but you were wise to layer.
I try to layer when I walk too, and I really need to find a light windbreaker with no lining. The wind is usually what chills me, but I don't need fleece or what ever. I don't think I warm up as quickly as you, but I don't run.
Proud of your efforts and glad you enjoyed your visits, and I'm sure they will occur more frequently as the weather improves.

So glad you had a great reunion. Although, I also pictured you taking off layers as you went. You're such a streaker!

emoticon I am so glad you enjoyed yourself so much!

When you described being overheated and unzipping, I had this picture of you running while shedding clothes (aren't we talking about streaking on one thread or another). Of course, you could do that and then turn around and run back and pick up all you've left behind. emoticon

This reminded me of my DD's question when she wanted to try running: how do you run? Put one foot in front of the other and go!
Congrats on getting out there and on remembering so much. emoticon

You had me going thought process ws something like, "What's she talking about? I thought she was going for a run today, not meeting up with an old pal...." Yeah, I'm slow. But really happy the runner-you is back in action!

Very cool! BTW, I took your advice and started Doc Martin. Took me awhile to warm up to it, but it does make me smile.
