So, earlier this week I did the right thing, and tossed out all the junk that was in my kitchen. (I'm holding on to the Easter candy though--Cadbury Crème eggs are truly a special treat!) Out went the storebought cookies, so long leftover pizza, adios leftover spaghetti. Welcome, Dave's Killer Bread, sole, salmon, Brussels sprouts, and asparagus! And also, my weakness:
Condiments. So many condiments.
Oh my gosh, I love condiments! Fancy mustards, oils, nut butters, relishes, lighter mayo, pesto, hot sauces...YUM! And while I can't portion control myself around sweets or salty snacks, I'm diligent about teaspooning-out my fattier condiments (see above list!). I like veggies just fine, but I truly love them if they're tossed with a couple teaspoons of lemon juice and fancy oil! I'm ambivalent about whole wheat pasta, but I'll look forward to it when I know I'm sprinkling it with nutritional yeast. Omelets are an outstanding breakfast, and ohsomuch tastier with a dollop of some Sambal Olek (chili paste) on top...
Condiments are my luxury item. Like most people, I'm on a fairly tight household budget, and I justify a $7 jar of maple almond butter by knowing it will last a long time, and keep me feeling inspired to make healthier choices overall. I mean, OUCH!, my grocery bill this week stung, but I likened it to ripping off a Band-Aid--just one painful 'riiiip,' and it was fine (mostly)!
