Juicing, and 5-2

Wednesday, March 27, 2013

I think that lasting weight loss is accomplished with changes applied over time. I want to share two changes I have made that are important to me. The first is juicing.
Like many people I heard about juicing from Joe Cross. I had prayed for help in my weight loss journey and Joe's work crossed my path. I ordered a juicer and started juicing right away, I was planning on doing a fast but my doc was not happy about it so I decided to take the longer journey. I have have been juicing for 4 months now and I marvel at the changes. If I remember correctly the first thing I noticed was my body delighting in the juice. I knew right away that my body was using the nutrients in the juice and I was craving more. I tried various things but I ended up with a pattern of juicing once a day in the morning. I call it brown juice, it is not pretty, but the taste is good. Typically I juice carrots, green apple, lime, ginger cilantro, cucumber, tomato and greens. The greens change amount the following: kale, chard, mustard greens, cabbage.
The hardest thing was keeping the produce in stock I my home, many if not most juicers end up getting a second frig just for produce. I am trying to make do with one, but I may buy a dorm frig to supplement my space. I find that I need to go to the store about three times a week.
I have noticed marked improvements in my health. My skin glows, my nails are stronger and smoother, my hair is thicker and grows faster. I have been surrounded by colds and flu and not caught any of it. All that being said I have not lost any weight to speak of.
Then I heard about 5-2. Eating without tracking, restriction or guilt 5 days a week and eating 600 two days a week. My husband and I have done several weeks now where we restrict on Tuesday and Thursday and don't worry about the rest. We are both losing, several pounds a week. The first couple of cycles were hard but now we are settled into it and it is easy any our bodies actually anticipate it, wanting the freedom from digestion. We sleep deeply and feel something elemental going on. It is easy to be "good" when you know you can have whatever you want the next day.
We decided to do it after reading that this plan has a very high rate of compliance, most people actually stick with it. I can see it. It goes on in background- you are not constantly thinking about food or lack thereof. Is it Tue or Thursday? Restrict. If not eat. What could be simpler?
I know that I can reach my goals now, it is a matter of time. I can actually believe that I will lose the weight AND be healthy.
