The Biggest Maintenance Surprise

Tuesday, March 26, 2013

Thinking over the last 4 years, there have been quite a few surprises in this maintenance journey. That I would learn to love exercise is a surprise. That I would become a runner, and a competitive one at that, was totally unanticipated. That I would still be tracking my food almost every day all these years later is not what I expected. In one way I'm surprised I've kept 80 pounds off; in another I can't believe that I'm still trying to lose a couple more ounces.

But by far my biggest surprise is that four years after achieving a healthy BMI I am still working hard to improve my eating habits and behavior. I have come a long way; I intend to go even further.

I'm constantly trying to improve my eating habits. It's so easy to fall back into old patterns, even after years of maintenance. Good habits and routines are a life saver for sure. Guess that being aware is key.

You are so inspiring! I lost 25 pounds a couple years ago and put it back on slowly over the past two years. I am losing again and this time, I am thinking ahead about what I need to do to keep them off when I get to my goal -- and you are a great inspiration and role model!

emoticon you are an inspiration Marsha.
When I started out my goal was just to lose weight and I was blind to all the benefits living healthily would bring.
Now my mind has shifted to keeping a healthy BMI, and being strong and flexible as the years go by.
Keep up the good work my friend, you know it makes sense emoticon

Used to be we thought once we reached goal, we could eat like before again, now we know it is a lifestyle and habits makeover

I have only lost 30, with at least 10 more to go, but I can really relate to your post. My husband and I were just marveling over how far I've come fitness-wise. When I was a girl, there wasn't much "mandatory" phys ed for girls, especially in Catholic schools. Dodgeball in an asphalt parking lot in grade school, and once-a-week gym class in 9th grade. That was it! No sports teams, no nothing.

So finding my inner athlete has been a revelation!

Sometimes the discoveries we make along the journey is as great as reaching the goal.

And you look beautiful, so your plan is working!

I just think that you are being the person now that you were always suppose to be. Like Priscilla Patrick who is 70 & still teaches yoga (www.yogaone.com) after doing her great series on PBS-TV (she has clips on YouTube) she is 5'6" and 110#. Or Denise Austin who is 57 and she's 5'4" and 112#. They started young and just stayed with it.
You were never meant to be 80# heavier. You are the real you now.

I think that somehow, what we are seeing is the transformation that comes with maintenance... that is somehow required for successful maintenance. Healthy habits has to become a passion, a pursuit, a permanent part of our personalities... we have done more than lose weight... we have changed our nature... gained respect for ourselves, determined that we are worth the effort... turned on a switched. We've been Sparked!
