Vitamin D and the Winter Blues

Monday, March 25, 2013

Hey Peeps,

I have been really depressed over the past 3-6 months and found out that my vitamin D levels were almost depleted. My doctor prescribed a 10 week course of the vitamin D and I just finished my last weekly pill. I have to say upping my vitamin D, really helped give me back some of the energy I was lacking over the winter and helped with my winter blues. This vitamin actually helps restore serotonin levels to the brain. I had no idea it did that.

I also found out that serotonin is produced in the gut, so if you have stomach problems (I do) then it will affect your levels too. That might explain why I have suffered from depression for years while continuing to I have stomach issues. (would love to investigate more)

Yesterday, I went in for my follow up blood work to see where my levels are after the treatment. I am interested to see the results. I emailed my doctor to let her know I would like to continue the treatment one more round since I am feeling so much better, to the point I actually started to exercise more consistently (something I had lack interest in for the past few months).

Will keep you all posted on what I find out.

I am back in the norm (20-40 is the range) I started at 13 and am now up to 22. But still want to see how another round will make me feel. Hopefully it will also help with my on going weight loss issues. Since I have been gaining about a pound a week for the past 6 months. Nothing has seemed to help get it back on track. Even though my eating is in the range to lose weight. So frustrating.

Sorry to hear about your winter blues..
With stomach troubles it is sometimes beneficial to cut out wheat - maybe try ot for a week and see how it goes :)

I've been going through some Winter blues or some kind of blues as well. Good luck with your blood work and I hope that everything comes out the way you want it too.

Have you every tried drinking aloe for your stomach problems. My Mom use to have a hiatal hernia and I had a friend that had an ulcer and they both got relief when they drank the aloe juice. Sure glad you got your winter blues under control. That is why I live in Florida, I don't do cold weather.
