I've been training for my first half marathon for 3 months now. It WAS scheduled for May 5th...the Heels and Hills, it's focused on women, and is taking place in Las Colinas, TX. WELL...this past Sunday was the Dallas Rock & Roll Half Marathon. I had planned to go cheer on several of my friends that were running it. On Thursday night a friend and her fiancÚ called me to say they've decided to not run it since it was going to be so cold (35 degrees with 20 to 30 mph winds). They wanted to know if i wanted their bibs...i asked my training friend and we both said yes! At this point we've only trained for up to 10 miles. BUT a friend of mine who does these all the time told me that if i can do 10 i can do the half. He went on to say that the last 3.1 miles is all in your head...it's a mental game. So we went for it! AND...
I prepared all of my stuff the night before and woke up at 3am to get ready to leave.
It was soooo cold! I think it was about 33 degrees and that did NOT factor in the 20 to 30 mph winds. We huddled to stay warm until the building was opened up or, maybe people just broke into the building...
I will say this...i am so thankful that i have been on top of my training. And not to say anything against anyone else's experiences, but this was pretty smooth. After about mile 9 was i was getting tired. Up to this point we were averaging a 16mph pace. After mile 9 i slowed down a bit but i kept on going. All i thought about after mile 9 was that it was an easy 4 miler. 4 miles are the easy walks during the week...that was my pep talk to myself. After mile 10 i thought, "All i have left is a 5k." 5k's are easy!" After mile 11 i thought, "just 2 miles and i'm done." After mile 12 i thought, "I'm a half marathon finisher!"
I finished in 3:43:44. This was a 17:02mph pace. I knew i slowed down those last 4 miles. But today i'm at work and i'm walking around just fine. Lots of stretching, conditioning and training helped me get to this point. I'm 265lbs and i completed my first half marathon! and i feel great!!!!
My next half marathon is my original sign up - May 5th!

THIS is a huge accomplishment! Outstanding! I want you to think about how much better it will get. I also want you to think about your body as an engine and how you want to burn clean fuel! I am so excited for you as you will never forget your first. In fact, my first Half was the Inaugural St Petersburg RocknRoll Half here in Florida, Feb 12, 2012! I've now done 4 Halfs to date! You go girl!!!!! That is ! A lot of people (including myself) think they are too heavy, or not fit enough to do a half-marathon. Most wait until they get to some magic number on the scale to sign up for one. I am proud of you for not waiting, for just jumping at the opportunity to do it.
I have a couple of questions: 1.) Did you power walk or jog most of the way? 2.) Were there people of different athletic abilities there? Were there some walkers and trotters? 3.) At any point did your shin or knees begin to hurt or cramp?
