What helps the most

I was asked to think about what helps me most in trying to stay healthy and I have to say that goal setting has always been my best way to make lifestyle changes. One of the things that attracted me to SparkPeople is their emphasis on goals and specific tasks. So many of the motivation type articles talk about them that you can't miss it.

I have a book that I really like called 365 days of healthy living by Roberta Duyff. Her examples really resonated with me but she talks about Goals and Realistic Changes. Here are some of what she talked about:

Goal: Walk more every day
Realistic Change: Walk 15 minutes at lunch and 15 minutes at home after dinner

Goal: Eat more vegetables
Realistic Change: Eat salad 3x a week at dinner

Goal: Lose two lbs in January
Realistic Change: Skip 2nd helpings

I like these examples because it's easy to see Goals and how they are different from the enablers that make them happen.
